  1. > Darren Dreger: No official timeline, but I think we’re looking at something similar where we’re looking at January, perhaps into February, but the no-rush approach for Pettersson very much remains valid. He wanted to take his time to get a feel for the Vancouver Canucks and where they’re at. Well, the team is doing well, and Pettersson himself is doing great, so I could expect CAA Hockey, who represents Pettersson, to walk him through the multiple scenarios and the financial options that he is going to have relatively early in the new year. If he feels good at that point, then you launch into the negotiations with the Vancouver Canucks. No timeline, but the Canucks are eager, and they’re ready.

Chris Johnston also talks about Kuzmenko and he says teams are calling but the feeling is Kuzmenko is happy to be a Canuck and they’re trusting the process put in place by the coaching staff.

  2. Pettersson gambled that he was going to sustain that level of play and cash in at the end of the season.

That has not really happened. Despite the points, I don’t recall a single game where he has dominated and taken it over. There’s been a lot of passive play and sparks of life, but he’s not been playing at a $12 million per level at all.

You don’t get nights off when you’re making that kind of dough. All eyes are on you to produce and elevate those around you, every game. Taking up that kind of cap space means we aren’t able to build around him the same way we would at his current cap hit.

I’ve seen very little to suggest he’s worth substantially more than Hughes or Miller. IMO he has lost leverage since the first 10-15 games of the season and Allvin needs to stand his ground. Give him a $9.5-10 million per offer and see what his response is.

If he declines all offers and opts to sign a 1 year deal, it’s time to trade him to the highest bidder for as much as we can get for him. I say this as a big fan who owns his jersey – everything changes once you have your bag.

  3. Petey over 11 turns us into the leafs thanks to JB era asset management. Even 10.5 sounds like a death knell watching this guy in games against good teams this year

  4. Petey definitely not making a case he deserves more than Hughes and Miller. I’m kinda glad they’ve anchored the 8m mark on our team. How does Petey say he’s worth more than either of them, other than being younger than Miller? That said, I still expect him to go super saiyan in Jan/Feb and make us forget this rather weak fall.

  5. His play puts him anywhere from 8m to 14.5 depending on how well he’s playing over a multi game stretch. 11 is a safe number for the team to pay seeing that he can go from being a hart and selke trophy candidate, to being the 2nd best forward on the team at any time.

  6. 11m+ will handicap us for years, but we may not have a choice unfortunately due to Benning fucking us in the ass here.

  7. Why is everyone acting like Petey is out in the media saying “Get me 12.5mil or I’m outtah here!”

I very much doubt it will be a money issue, the reason he waited was to see how the team is looking. It’s about having a chance to win the cup in his career.

  8. Petey has approached contract negotiations like a businessman from the start so I don’t think he will suddenly take a discount. I also don’t think he will sign for 8 years since that greatly hampers his ability to sign another big money contract when he becomes a free agent.

I think the most likely scenarios are either 11M x 5 years, or 12M x 6 years. If Allvin manages to sign him for anything less then there needs to be a statue of Chef Allvin right next to Roger Neilson.

  9. I’ve said before that I can see them going 4-5 years at a lower AAV, but honestly, if 10.5×8 gets it done, I’d do that

A close comparable is probably Barkov, and he signed for 12.27% of the cap at the time, which would be around $10.75M next year if the cap rises. I shaved a little off since Pettersson has 1 RFA year remaining, whereas Barkov was a pending UFA when he signed his extension.

  10. It would be great to sign him long term but not at $12M a year. Hughes and Miller are much bigger impact players than Pettersson, and even Boeser is outplaying him this year. Miller is outscoring Petey while playing the matchup role and this fanbase was up in arms at his $8M/yr contract just because he shows a bit of emotion on the ice. You don’t give a $12M contract to the 5th best player on your team (I’m including Demko here). Pastrnak is objectively better and he got $11.25M. Hopefully the two sides can converge on something fair like $10 – $10.5M.
