From Meghan Chayka. Goaltending stats compared to last year as well as defensive stats compared to last year.

The goaltending is THE issue. Also, the expected goals against is up due to the PK. It’s not measured for 5 on 5 only. The defensive stats show the Devils have even gotten better in most areas.

  1. The eye test shows that our defense is making avoidable mistakes every game, but most of them are from the younger guys, so this is expected to happen. But goaltending is very, very weak and could possibly cost us a playoff spot

  2. Unfortunately we are still some time away from being a contender. The youthfulness of our D will take some time to pan out. Yes, we need a goaltender, but there is such a small pool of above average goaltenders, let alone ones that are available.

  3. I don’t get how people can watch this team day in and out and not realize our goaltending is beyond sub par. Even with defensive mistakes we don’t have goaltenders who make bailout saves, quite the opposite actually. Both goaltenders serve up more soft serve than Dairy Queen.

  4. Goals against per game has a gone up .9. Expected goals against per game has gone up .76. The defense has gotten better in most areas, but is allowing more scoring chances, more shots from the slot and the opponent is expected to score more as a result. Goaltending is a massive issue, but I don’t see how this exonerates the defense.
