Mayo Addresses Rumors Regarding him ‘Rubbing People The Wrong Way’

  1. Stuff like this really reminds me that I don’t have the stomach for awkwardness to be a beat writer. Would not enjoy asking someone to their face in front of 30 other people “Hey, would you like to comment on the rumors that people think you’re an asshole?”. I don’t even like secondhand embarrassment let alone this.

  2. It felt like that reporting was coming from a Belichick loyalist upset with Mayo angling for Belichick’s job. And Mayo’s response feels like someone who’s angling for Belichick’s job.

  3. The subtext of what Mayo is saying is that maybe those who claim Mayo is rubbing people the wrong way are the people who are the problem. I tend to agree with Mayo. Whether or not Mayo is “rubbing the people the wrong way” is irrelevant IMO. Saying to reporters that Mayo “is rubbing people the wrong way” is a sign, IMO, that the person saying it is toxic.

  4. The fact that Mayo is willing to go on the record about this, and the ones who are saying he’s rubbing people the wrong way are anonymous, tells me all I need to know.

  5. Hopefully Mayo cleans house except for the training staff when he becomes head coach in the next two weeks.

  6. Measured, thoughtful stuff from Mayo.

    I liked this bit:

    >But at the end of the day, hopefully, whoever put that story out, is man, or woman enough, to bring it to my attention to have a conversation.

  7. As someone who has rubbed people the wrong way when in leadership positions, I largely agree with what Mayo is saying, it comes with the territory.

For what its worth, I met Mayo years ago at a charity event, he came across as being a genuinely nice and intelligent person. I think he has a bright future in coaching, I just don’t know if this would be a great situation for him as a first time head coach.

  8. *While Mayo could be a strong candidate for the potential vacancy given his experience and tenure with the team, there may be better outside candidates that the franchise should consider this offseason.*

Is that the reporter’s personal opinion? Why the heck is that in the story.
