  1. Really hope they treat it like a preseason game and only play one quarter, two tops, and that it’s just vanilla play calling. I get wanting to avoid rust but I want us to take advantage of having the 1 seed clinched already and be as close to 100% as possible by January 20th.

  2. I figured this. I said they’d at least play a half.

Mike rested his team once and paid for it in the playoffs I believe. The next time he didn’t and they won. So I figured Kyle would follow.

  3. Good. If you’ve ever played sports at least semi-competitively then you should know that routine is everything as an athlete. Going two whole weeks without being fully invested into a game-plan and preparation is a recipe for disaster.

  4. That sounds about right.

People have to remember, in season games, you no longer have the 90ish man roster you get for the preseason. So even after the half, I wouldn’t be surprised to see big names still out there.

Defense wise, it seems a bit easier to know who should be sitting. Armstead, obviously, but I’d equally be surprised to see Hargrave out there. Bosa probably plays the half, same with ward and Warner. Greenlaw could go either way.

Offensively, they probably all play a half, minus cmc. Trent sits at half, Purdy will sit, and I wouldn’t be surprised if any of the WRs play the whole game. BA has been pretty healthy all year, if they run out of spots for people to sit, he may play the full game. Deebo should sit after half. Kittle plays half. Juice probably plays the whole game.

I’d be shocked if they sit the people they want to sit after 1 quarter, unless it becomes a blowout either way.

  5. They can’t treat this like a true preseason game strictly due to numbers.

90 players vs 45 makes it impossible.

  6. Interesting piece on the radio how about how a team doesn’t even have enough people on its roster to sit all its starters and then then you have to decide which of those starters is most important to sit

  7. I’m really hoping the Rams decide 6 vs 7 seed isn’t really worth it and treat the game similarly. Give the starters a quarter to a half to avoid rust, then have a nice backup Bowl in the second half.

  8. I know the Rams have seeding to worry about, but I still see both teams’ starters playing this game at less than 100% intensity/effort. Great for them to stay in rhythm and mindset by going through the motions, but no need to go all out.

  9. Preseason style I hope. Anyone with a significant injury should rest, healthy guys get out there for a few drives or for two scoring drives and then. Sit everyone you can after that.

Vanilla scheme, nothing new, nothing risky.

The only player I’d prefer to see play even if they aren’t 100% ready is Ray Ray. He needs to be punt returner over bell in the playoffs, but I don’t want his first snap to be a punt in the divisional

  10. I don’t understand this logic from Kyle or anyone else agreeing with him. He wants them to practice like they are going to play, and then lots of people are assuming they will be taken out at some point, so why play them at all if not for the whole game? Anyone is one fluke play away from getting injured. Injuries are unpredictable. Just look at Brock in the NFC championship last year. This game is as meaningless as a preseason game. In fact, I’d argue it’s even more meaningless. Preseason is time for the starters to get back in game playing shape after not playing in games for months. This is not that. Our players need rest – healthy or not.

Also, a game plan isn’t needed. Kyle has stated he doesn’t game plan for preseason, so why is this any different? By all means, keep your healthy starters practicing, but there is no reason to put them out there on game day if the position has a backup on the 53, which besides our kicker, punter, and long snapper, I’m pretty sure we have.

Kyle talks about how resting players can lead to more injuries. To that I say: it’s the coaches job to make sure players are still focused and sharp, and to even more extent, the players job as a professional athlete on a stacked team with a real shot at winning it all this year. Practice, stretch your ass off, rehab, and get mentally/physically refreshed for the hardest 3 game stretch of the season.

Putting any starter out there in a meaningless game is asinine and risky as hell. The schedule is grueling enough at 17 games now. I don’t understand how people could say it’s ok to sit Trent and CMC but it’s ok to play Deebo. Every starter we have is crucial to this team: Brock, CMC, Deebo, Aiyuk, Juan, Juice, Kittle, the OL, the DL, Fred, Dre, Mooney, Lenoir, Ambry, Gipson, Ja’yir… I pray to God none of them are out there for even one play. They don’t need it…period.

  11. I hope there’s a “gentleman’s agreement” to try to keep the clock running as much as possible yet keep the game competitive and let the game decide who wins.

  12. Gotta keep the momentum going. Don’t want to end up like the 2019 Ravens or the Packers that we sent home a few years ago.

Winning isn’t that important this week but staying game ready is a must. They’ve worked too hard to get complacent and after the heartbreaks we’ve had I don’t think any of them are taking this opportunity for granted.

  13. I think this is the right approach. Rest the guys that are questionable on the injury report this week, and maybe the older vets like Trent that really don’t need the reps where the risk is greater than the reward. Play the young guys for a quarter or two, even guys like Purdy or Aiyuk, who could benefit from reps.

I’m hoping since the Rams are also going to rest a bunch of guys so nobody is going to be trying to take anyone’s head off and cause an injury (I know they can still fall to the 7th seed but I really don’t see much of a difference playing @dallas or @Detroit). Maybe have a mutual agreement between the two teams to play nice lol.

  14. I hope they play the third quarter only. We have a pattern of struggling a little bit in the first half, while Kyle is setting up all his offensive looks, and then using what he’s set up to scheme more effectively in the second half. Might hurt moral to have the starters open the game and struggle, versus getting the benefit of second half adjustments. No one wants to go into the playoffs wondering if we suck

  15. Stupid. Let’s play your starters in basically a pre-season game. Watch McVay put his second and third stringers on the field.

  16. Id imagine there are a few people that need to meet a contractual season goals for a bonus.

  17. I think this is so stupid. Outside of game bonuses I just don’t see a point in this, just feels like we’re asking for it.
