  1. That’s… pretty bad. Midseason I honestly thought we were set with Howell. This is pretty jarring and essentially proves me wrong. Looks like we actually need to draft a QB with our top pick.

  2. He showed promise with the arm talent and toughness, but simply put he wasn’t getting it out fast enough. The only stat missing here is time to throw. Kind of impressed he never got hurt. Durability/availability is a good trait for a backup

  3. Yeah… I mean, this won’t please a certain section of the fanbase will it. I think you know who I mean. But the rest of us, I suspect, have kinda known this all along.

  4. I know we started playing tougher defenses, but damn was Howell’s downfall shocking. Guy showed so much big play ability early in the year, but now he looks like fucking John Beck out there.

  5. Sam has gotten better and then regressed. I think the sheer quantity of pass attempts has padded his stats and made him look a lot better than he actually is. I think he is a solid backup, but we need to draft a new QB. If he wants to start somewhere we need to cut him lose or trade him.

  6. as they say, context matters. These are poor results from a clean pocket but if a guy is only getting a clean pocket 10% of the time he will have no idea what to do with it as a rookie. I also think we have the kid seeing ghosts at this point ala patrick ramsey

  7. I’m really starting to hate this sub constantly relying on PFF or other stat sites, to make their judgment on players. If you watch the games, you know what is and what isn’t right about this team. WAS has legitimate scrubs on the OL with the exception of Cosmi. The OL hasn’t been good since Bill Callahan left. This is Sam’s first season as a full time starter and the second offensive system he’s had to learn. He’s shown to be able to pass the ball efficiently, maybe not always consistently, but that should be expected with this dilapidated team and with his experience.

If Howell’s last name was Heinicke, we’d be shitting our pants with joy and praying we keep him to develop behind a better OL with better coaching.

  8. I’ve been increasingly out on Howell on the season has gone on, but the one argument for him getting another chance next year that has continued to resonate with me is that he’s rarely had a clean pocket. If he’s 5th in attempts though, this seems to invalidate that argument completely…

I’d be interested to know what PFF considers a “clean pocket” though. Like, if Sam is adjusting his game to get passes off with a 2 second pop time, does that pass attempt count as a “clean pocket” simply because he got it off before the pass rush could create pressure? I feel like that’s been a massive part of Howell’s game this season–he doesn’t feel comfortable in the pocket because the line gave up so many sacks to start the season, so he’s been opting for more short yardage looks instead of going through his progression. His yards per attempt and avg target depth being as low as they are definitely suggests this is the case. So even though the pocket may have been clean when he throws, the imminent threat of pressure has definitely affected Howell’s style of play.

Ultimately though, I think this data combined with what we can see when we watch Howell indicates he’s always going to struggle as a pocket passer. It’s clear he has issues with standing in there and pushing the ball downfield. He doesn’t try to go through his progression, and he’s also struggling with the easy throws too. Part of it might just be that he lacks the physical tools you want in a good pocket passer. Provided we don’t win on Sunday we should have better options and at this point we’d be pretty dumb not to take them.

  9. Wouldn’t put much into it. I could probably count the number of times on one hand that hes had a clean pocket to throw from . Everybody all for PFF when it fits what they want lol
