[Adam] All the Stefon Diggs talk had me wondering about some things, so I went to the film and started watching all of the pass attempts to him with a negative EPA. And then I found this in the Jags game. Looks like a core injury. So I went to look at some basic numbers.

Through the Jags game, Diggs had an EPA per target of .380. Exceptional.

But from weeks 6-12, following the Jags game, he dropped to .02 EPA per target.

Weeks 13-17, -.14 EPA per target.

It could be circumstantial. But worth noting.

  1. Kind of a weird play to end up with a core injury on.

Did Oluokon give him a soft left hook that got him “just right” at the end of the play?

  2. I’ve been saying for weeks that he’s clearly hurt. I’d assumed it was hand/arm related since it seemed like he was dropping balls he wouldn’t normally drop.

  3. Worth noting that Joe Marino on the Locked on Bills podcast said this week that he does not think Diggs is injured. Just saying that because he obviously watches a lot of film. He said it on the All-22 review episode this week.

  4. The shot he took in the Eagles game too has me wondering. He got destroyed in Josh’s TD run and I couldn’t believe there wasn’t a flag.

  5. I dunno. I trust /u/BangedUpBills more than just about anyone as far as a non-team doctor’s opinion of things based off film study. If he hasn’t said it’s a core injury based on what he’s seen and studied, it probably isn’t.

  6. I don’t see any reason they would hide an injury. Cover 1 has a pretty good film breakdown on YouTube

  7. The other thing worth noting is that Diggs has never been shy about making it very well known that he’s not happy about a lack of targets. He has been particularly silent on this, and explained it away as he has been double covered despite some teams not doubling him, and him being double covered his entire career hasn’t really had that kind of an effect on his production. That also doesn’t explain the fact that he isn’t even in the game as much as people like Shakir and Sherfield.

  8. Another reason to hate the hell out of that London game. If a guy liked Banged Up Bills noticed it off the bat in October than I think it’s fair to say that’s the genesis of Diggs slippage in production.

  9. I don’t think he’s hurt but just constantly double teamed and hasn’t been able to get open but Josh will always throw to Diggs in key situations where they need a play or a first down etc. He is their elite receiver for a reason and their most reliable.

Was this play before or after he had the ball stripped away from him which resulted in an interception?

  10. He took a shot against Denver too I think.

It would be beneficial to be up big by the middle of the third so he could get some extra rest.

  11. An awkward shove when he is off balance, not braced, and has some amount of lumbar flexion. The hit and the way he squirms and rolls makes me think this is a lower back injury.

Hasn’t diggs been on the injury report for his back? Maybe this was the first tweak.

Lower back problems would cause anyone to lose a step. If he has a disc herniation or bulge, a significant amount of rest and rehab are probably in order, but are not possible during the season. It would be entirely possible for a pro athlete to get some cortisone shots and plays through it.

All speculation. But it seems somewhat plausible.
