[Rapoport & Pelissero] “The Broncos head into the offseason with plenty of questions…but sources say there shouldn’t be a question about the status of GM George Paton. Paton is viewed as safe inside the organization, sources say.”

>The Broncos head into the offseason with plenty of questions and a variety of pertinent conversations to be had. But sources say there shouldn’t be a question about the status of general manager George Paton.

>Paton is viewed as safe inside the organization, sources say. Based on his overall evaluation talents and a strong working relationship with Sean Payton since the head coach arrived last offseason, all indications are Paton should stay on.

>It hasn’t been perfect for the respected Paton, who in 2022 hired Nathaniel Hackett and traded for quarterback Russell Wilson. Hackett was fired after less than one full season, and Wilson appears to be next out the door. But those moves came before Payton and Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner arrived. Since the trio has been together, the arrow has been pointing up, with the Broncos winning seven of their last 10 games and in line for their first winning season since 2016 if they can win Sunday’s finale against the Las Vegas Raiders.

>While Penner makes the final decision and is in charge, Payton’s voice is also strong. To be sure, there will be plenty of talks aimed at improving for the future. But the alliterative triumvirate of Payton, Paton, and Penner appear to be staying together.

  1. This organization is the fucking stupidest. George Paton should not be involved in finding the next QB. Paton has crippled this organization and if we’re so intent on turning the page from Russ than we should be turning the page on the idiot who decided to give him the contract that’s now crippling us

  2. Why am I looking at Arthur Smith and his mid tier mustache on my pristine r/DenverBroncos feed?

  3. Yea I don’t think it matters either way. Paton will/already has been stripped of any real decision making. This is Sean’s team. Unfortunately for George he had his shot and fumbled

  4. I’ll take the unpopular opinion here and say this is a good thing. Paton swung for the fence and missed on Wilson, and I am sure he has learned plenty from it. Why pay the price of the mistake and let somebody else benefit from the lesson learned? I assure you that however frustrating we as fans find the situation we are in, it is worse for Paton. He is the one sitting in front of a spreadsheet having to figure out how to muddle through our shitty cap situation. I think there is value in giving somebody a chance to work through their mistakes, especially when they are relatively new to a job. If it doesn’t work out, at least it shows future GM candidates that they will be given a fair shake.

The other thing to consider is that coming into this mess and playing second-fiddle to Sean Paton might not be a real attractive job opening. Give it another year and see which way the arrow is pointing. We already know this year is probably going to be rough anyway.

  5. I personally love George Paton and would be thrilled to keep him. Now that we actually have some decent draft capital and a consistent head coach I think he’s going to thrive. It’s hard to build a team when you’re building it for a new HC every year. I think this is the right move

  6. The two biggest decisions of his tenure he whiffed on. Our free agency pickups have been bad to mediocre. His draft picks on the other hand are likely what’s keeping him from being fired. I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays his roles are significantly reduced.
