[Perez] Could Jordan Montgomery, Cody Bellinger, Rhys Hoksins, Josh Hader & Matt Chapman head to Wrigley? It’s not as crazy as you’d think.

“I would not be surprised if the Chicago Cubs would end up with three of the five names…”

  1. Counsell and Hader reunion is kind of interesting. Counsell being the proxy judge on whether or not Hader is a character issue at this point would also satisfy some of my hesitancy with him.

  2. I’d love to get Belli and Chapman. Hader would be nice. I can’t see the Cubs getting more than 2 of the mentioned players. My guess would be Monty and Hoskins. I don’t think we’ll outbid the overspenders for Bellinger in the end.

  3. We should sign Hader to a 10-year, 400 million dollar deal. Payroll be damned. He’s basically a better Mariano Rivera with more upside.

(I am legally obligated to inform you all that this comment is not to be taken seriously, but it was my duty to make it.)

  4. With the Busch trade I see a Morel/Busch mini-platoon at 3B. Mini as in Busch would probably mostly play 3B and Morel mostly DH. You don’t trade a very good pitching prospect for a 26 year old prospect if you’re not going to play him.

If the Cubs sign Belli and Hoskins that almost guarantees PCA getting blocked. If the Cubs sign Chapman then 3B is locked up and Busch moves to 1B leaving Hoskins as unnecessary. The roster doesn’t make sense with those 3 position players signing.

It seems like the best, most flexible signings (if we get 3 of those 5) will be Montgomery, Hader and Hoskins. Hoskins would be a short 1 year deal, Montgomery somewhere around 5/125 and Hader 5/100. $60M for those 3 in 2024 putting us at about $240M for the year. Wisdom would have to get traded, Smyky and Taillon might even need to go (Cubs would probably have to eat some of that money to get anything done). Do some deferral money magic and have a $220M payroll keeping the Cubs under the penalty threshold.

    You heard it here first.

  5. This reminds me of reports last year when we were going to sign both bogaerts and swanson.
