Disaster twins

You cannot expect to have a component offense when your starting backcourt is shooting like this from the field, and one of them is a non factor from 3. This thread said it’s diligence about #4, but Fred needs some evaluation as well. Lemme clarify that I’m at aware of everything he does on the court. He’s a great leader, vet, and table/culture setter. He stabilizes the team in a way we haven’t seen since Harden days. That being said, Ime insistence of making a “Fred-centric” offense is clearly reaching its ceiling and limiting us as a whole. We’re running high screen pnr w/ him like he’s Luka Donic or Trae. The ONLY reason it worked as well as it did was due to Sengun being one of the best roll threats in the league. Fred is not an efficient enough creator to warrant this on his own, and teams know that. They are sending multiple bodies in the lane to take away the pass to Sengun or stop his roll. We are making Sengun job so much harder than it should be when he’s essentially rolling into a trap. He can’t finish at the rim, and is lacking a floater/midrange game. That’s just his scoring, the playmaking is not ideal as well. He’s only passing to Goon on the roll. Not making cross passes when defenders cheat over. If your staring guard can’t take advantage of over-aggressive help then there’s a limit to what u can do offensively. Ofc we knew this when he signed that deal but it’s just the diet of Fred centric offense that’s the issue. Not Is fault tho, we thought Jalen would be good enough to take away ball-handling duties and we had a 6th man of the year candidate that was supposed to help our bench scoring. Just a bad situation in our backcourt rn.

  1. It’s majorly because of how much volume FVV is forxed to take we need better shooters to let him create for them

  2. And all of this weighing on Sengun as the only inside threat we have. If you can’t hit your shots it makes it much easier to double Sengun down low.

  3. Calling it a Fred centric offense implies that Ime is catering the offense around him at the detriment of the team. We’ve tried other methods and they’ve utterly failed. They envisioned Fred as being able to toggle between playing both on-ball and off-ball, but whenever anyone but Fred has handled the ball the offense has looked awful.

And the reason Sengun has become one of the best roll threats in the league is because of Fred, not in spite of him. If it was so easy a play to run then we’d see other players spam PNR with him, though no one has shown any competency running the play with Sengun.

I just don’t understand this sub’s obsession with pretending that Fred’s contributions are negligible and can be easily replaced with the average point guard, or that his scoring is holding the team that much back. Other than his drives when he’s taking it in against a crowded paint and throwing up those awkward floaters and lay ups, a lot of his shots are necessary to keep the defense honest. Just because he’s the floor general doesn’t mean he’s not allowed to take shots himself. Sure, there’s one or two of those hero shots a game that he attempts that I could live without him taking, but they’re not the majority of his shot diet.

  4. As long as we cannot find a way to punish other teams with shooting nothing will change. But i am still very optimistic even 1 +40% 3 point shooter will change a lot for this team.

  5. FG% is a dead, useless stat in the modern era. It means nothing.

Fred is only 1.9% below league average in true shooting percentage. Considering he’s our bailout shot guy and our main assist man, AND has a great assist to turnover ratio, I will take his performance every time.

  6. Rap fan here. Don’t blame fred. He’s better than whatever else you’ll replace him with right now. He misses shots, but everything else he does is legitimately elite.

  7. FVV has been a low percentage shooter for his entire career. That was one of the knocks on him as a free agent. Jalen just takes a lot of bad and crazy shots

  8. Fred and Jalen aren’t great shooters, but can we please retire raw FG% forever? Useless stat

  9. The coping in this thread is hilarious. Yeah, the rate at which a player puts the ball in the basket in a sport where the entire point of the game is to put the ball in the basket is a useless stat, OK…

At least FVV is a good playmaker and can shoot threes, which offsets his terrible FG%. Jalen is just terrible across the board

  10. Yeah, if Jalen was the efficient 25 ppg SG who can run an offense we’ve all hoped we’d be just fine. Fred in more of a spot up role and secondary play maker is when we can be a really good team

But alas, the offense is better running through him than Jalen at this point
