Thoughts on bringing back Dusty Baker

A lot of class and smarts was shown in bringing back someone of his unique stature, with all his institutional knowledge gained over a storied career. The relationship he and Bob Melvin already have, and will build with the team, along with all the new coaching staff and players, is going to make an exciting and hopefully winning season. The moves they’ve been making are giving me optimism that I didn’t feel in the past few seasons. Your thoughts?

  1. Sentimental side – it’s great I love Dusty and I love how the Giants honor their past and their legends.

The cynical side – Dusty and Posey will be thrown on KNBR when fans get too upset to promise everyone that the team is building a winner and “doing everything they can” to compete.

  2. It’s a sinecure – Baker gets to hang around and work when he wants to, the Giants staff and players get to hang around Baker and occasionally get him to do something.

It’s not actually a meaningful job.

  3. I’m really really happy. I’ve said it a thousand times before here on r/sfgiants (and i think on r/baseball too), but the point is…notwithstanding Bochy whom i love dearly and all he did as Giants manager, I’ve always had a soft spot for Dusty in particular.

It might be because of the nostalgia factor tbh, as he was the Giants manager of my childhood when i first became a fan in the late 90s.

I was also super happy when he came back to the org in 2018. When i was at the home opener and during the pre-game ceremony, various former players and officials were being introduced by Renel followed by walking onto the field. When it was Dusty’s turn, i shit you not, the ovation for him was so loud that you couldn’t even hear Renel announce his name. It was fucking magical.

As to what he’ll bring to the team in this capacity, let’s wait and see. I’ve no doubt he loves the Giants despite the heartbreak of 2002. And i hope to see him at the ballpark from time to time.

  4. I mean, Farhan obviously can’t be left without a babysitter, so why not Dusty? Dusty has forgotten more about baseball than most front office types will ever learn, so why not?

  5. I just hope that the front office doesn’t use him to pressure Melvin… The guy deserves a full season of not feeling like it his team alone to manage..
