Some Advanced Data From our Season so Far

  1. As you can see from the charts, our last 5-7 games have us performing as the best team in the division – Hopefully we can keep this up! They also show that offensively this season we are doing well but are being killed by poor goaltending and a poor powerplay. Finally, Greig, Zub, and Chych have all been great performers with Kubalik, Brannny, and Hamonic struggling the most.

  2. This is great. Mostly matches the eye test / other advanced stats models. A few things that Im curious about:

    1. Why does GAR favour Chych so much. Looking at Net rating / game score / XGA / Jfresh / Andy Rono models, they dont seem to like him this much – especially his defence. Yet in this model his defence is great.
    2. Vlad – most models really dont like his defence, which matches the eye test / reputation. A reason I think we should trade him if we can get a good return. We need more defensive forwards.
    3. Brady – Why is it that all models have him as one of the worst defensive forwards in the league. Watching him, he seems to hustle. I don’t quite understand why he is universally shown as being a terrible defender. For such a big guy with decent top end speed (similar body to Barkov), its surprising how hes always so bad. I assume its his first step / lack of defensive instincts. If he can improve here, he would be so much more impactful. We really need this to improve.
    4. Josh Norris is very worrying. Hopefully this is just due to injury recovery, but hes never been favoured in these models. That contract is scary.
    5. Greig – I keep saying it, hes going to be a star. What a draft we had in 2020. Him and Zary are tops in many advanced stats models for rookies this year. According to the EV hockey guys they deserve the calder currently (although neither will get it).

  3. So that third chart shows Tarasenko actually hasn’t been all that great defensively? I’ve seen comments on here that suggest the contrary. This sorta meets my eye test so far, don’t know how I feel about him or what really is the best course of action going forward.

Obviously the intangibles are there and he’s producing now, and I’m interested in seeing how this chart changes with more time now that the new JM system seems to be bearing fruit. And maybe with Pinto back the make up of that 3rd line changes and Tarasenko isn’t as compromised. But long term? Idk.

I think if he did want to stay, and we did want to keep him, we would need a bit of a $ cut off his $5M.
