I know they say the statistics say go for it on 4th and short. I can’t imagine having to know you left the tying points on the table by not kicking a FG. Sometimes the simplest answer is the best.

  1. It has nothing to do with us, Nick, or the Eagles philosophy.

We would never give up 3 points when up 2 scores. Going for it at best leads to a 3 score game. Getting 3 is a 3 score game. If the Lions had analytics, they DEFINITELY told Campbell not to go for it.

Campbell took underdog too far. Never go full underdog. Doug knew that balance better than anyone in Dan’s place. The Lions deserved to be there, were whooping ass, and these decisions were still that of “lets close this game.” To start the second half …. horrible choice.

The second 4th down play was debatable, but I still think you take 3 there with the niners resurgence by that point. It slows the game down.

  2. If you kick the second field goal, no matter what the 49ers do, it’s a one score game. Down 2 scores you’ve lost. Extend the game as long as possible.

  3. That first failed 4th down conversion is what started to give 49ers momentum also. You kick the FG there’s no momentum yet. I didn’t hate the call but I was worried it was the wrong choice, it was.

  4. Apparently Badgely is an atrocious kicker and MCDC didn’t trust him to make key field goals. Just goes to show how lucky we are to have somebody as clutch as Chicken Little

  5. The thing with going for it on 4th and short is when you convert it, people love you and when you don’t, you’re an idiot for not “taking the points.”

The first failed conversion was at the 35-40(don’t recall exact spot.) that’s a long FG so no guarantee he makes it. If you think a failed 4th down attempt gives the Niners momentum, what would a shanked FG have done?

  6. Going for it on 4th won us a Super Bowl and kicking a field goal on 4th contributed to us losing a Super Bowl. What the hell is the matter with you all. Also, the WR dropped the ball they should have converted the first one.

  7. Dan Campbell is clueless ! I think he squandered their only chance at a SB appearance!

Siri is like Belichik compared to DC

  8. I just like how we are that team that started that aggressive playcalling from 2017. Doug pederson changed the nfl

  9. One aspect not many people are talking about is if his mindset was go for it always. Why didn’t he go for it 1st half on 4th and goal? To me that was logical to go for it. You fail Niners get ball in their end one with no time. You make it you are up 3 TD. Plus it was higher possibly to make than the others.

  10. There are conservative coaches, analytics driven coaches, and there are coaches that are simply overaggressive.

Dan Campbell is a fourth type of coach: just plain dumb. He costs the Lions a couple of wins a year with his nonsensical calls.

  11. I think people are forgetting Goff was throwing money shots. His WRs dropped the ball. Yes you need balance but let’s not act the play call and throw were bad. His WRs dropped it and their RB fumbled. They beat themselves. Just like Packers did.

49ers won’t get away with that with Mahomes

  12. The problem with being aggressive is you have to pick your battles.

So if they convert… Then what?! Do you ever go for the FG? What’s his comfort? Under 45 yards? Under 40? 4th and 10 from the 15? Just getting the first doesn’t win you the game… If you’re not kicking the FG there when would you decide if was appropriate? Is it the FG range or is it the first down range?

  13. The Det WRs shitting the bed and a miracle completion that bounced off a dudes face had a far bigger impact on the result

  14. If Campbell took those 2 field goals and then still conceded those Niners touchdowns they could have won the game still. But putting them down an extra 6 points sealed their fate.

  15. I don’t mind the first time going for it. Second time when you’ve lost all momentum, finally get a good but difficult drive going and can steer your destiny if you get the 3 points…gotta kick there.

  16. Insanity that they kicked before the half then went for it when a kick would have tied it

    Man they blew it lol

Lions fans gotta be on suicide watch after that game

  17. I have no idea why Dan went with it besides him not being used to the moment. It’s also like Coach Nick said, “if it works I look like a genius, if it doesn’t I’m the dumbest coach ever” (paraphrase).

To go for it in the second half after not being able to move the ball at all just seems ridiculous to me but hindsight is always 20/20. We would all be calling Dan the man (see what I did there?) If he decided to go for it on 4th and got a touchdown. The unfortunate thing is that after this year their OC is probably gone and a few key players too. They’ll probably be in the same boat we were in this year.

  18. Genuinely think they should’ve gone for it before the half and then taken the 2 field goals in the second half.

Like you have all 3 time outs, it’s first and goal and Montgomery was carving them up. Just call 4 straight rushing plays. Stupid playcalling and a prime example of how coaches can lose a game

  19. I think his biggest mistake was not going for the kill shot before halftime. Dougie P would never have kicked that FG

  20. I do not agree with the call at all, but I have to point out that their subsequent touchdown drive would’ve been met with much more resistance had they only been down by 7 instead of 10. Assuming that if they take the FG, the game would’ve been tied might be dumber than the call to go for it in the first place..

  21. In that situation it probably doesn’t say that you go for it. There are a finite number of possessions left and therefore only so many points a team can realistically score so you take them anyway you can get them.

  22. Something else to mention.

we have jake “59 yarder in a downpour” elliot.

    other teams do not.

  23. Lions lost the game when they didn’t kick the field goal up 24-10.  Instead of being up 3 scores, they gave momentum to SF, who were able to cut the game to 1 score.  Feel bad for Lions fans, who are going to have to live with this idiocy for a very long time.

  24. I’m all about aggressive playcalling. I never question going for it on 4th cause I would be going for it as much as Campbell and Sirianni if I had the reigns

  25. But why didn’t they kick a field goal the moment they got into range on their last drive rather than waste almost a full minute trying to score a TD? I think that was the dumbest decision of the night.

They even went for it on 4th rather than kick. Made no sense. And they wasted a time out too.

  26. Against the 49ers…hell I would have went for it on 4th and goal at the 3 and not kicked the fg there. Some teams, like all those in the championship game just don’t quit.

  27. Olsen made a good point on the broadcast. We would not be criticizing it if it worked. Campbell is the most aggressive coach on 4th down (not counting us cause 4th and 1s are basically 3rd and 1s with the push tush) and his aggressiveness has been one of the main reasons they made it as far as they have.
