Trai Essex’s thoughts on the Arthur Smith hire

  1. This is what the 49ers have done with Purdy, there’s always going to be a ceiling when you don’t have good qb play. There’s basically no other option but to emphasize your strengths.

  2. We’re the only organization i know who would roll with kenny pickett as a starter next year based off of his two year sample size of complete garbage. I mean if you need to hire a coordinator that specifically hides your qb’s flaws instead of trying to elevate his strengths ‘kenny has no strengths’ then maybe idk your qb sucks just a thought. Also having a run oriented offense in a passing oriented nfl just screams outdated philosophy to me.

  3. Totally correct. Wonder how many more years until a playoff win. Won’t be a real contender for at least 5 years at this rate (2+ years after Kenny is gone), and then guys like TJ and Minkah will be on the decline. This team ain’t going anywhere without a change at QB1.

  4. It says nothing about Pickett stop it, it just says Tomlin doesn’t know how to hire an OC.

  5. I mean, the 49ers and Lions each ran the ball more times than we did this year. They did okay.

I’m high on Pickett, but he’s never going to be a Mahomes/Allen style QB. If we run an offense built for a gun slinger with a QB who is best as an efficient distributor, we’re not going to beat gun slinger QB’s.

We need an offense that makes best use of our overall talent.

  6. I agree with this take. Whether it’s about Pickett specifically or just a desire to be a run-heavy offense, the ceiling he mentions feels very real.

  7. That’s what the Steelers want to be an outdated 3 yards and a cloud of dust type of team. Gets you 8-10 wins and then smoked in the playoffs by the modern run teams.

  8. I agree but, we can supplement a potentially strong run game with a solid QB (draft or free agency). I can’t say that I love the signing of Arthur Smith but, I don’t hate it. Let’s see where it goes.

  9. What is the hard ceiling? Losing a relatively close road AFC championship at Arrowhead vs a near flawless Mahomes? Seems to be the hard ceiling on just about every team in the AFC for the past 6 years.

  10. Kenny’s stats his first two years under Canada were fairly close to Ben’s in his first two seasons. (Canada was still an absolute shit coordinator)

The problem was that our offense couldn’t stay on the field long enough like we did in 2004-2006, so the defense broke down over the stretch with fatigue and injuries.

With Smith as coordinator and a strong run game we can control the clock, give the D a break, and keep them healthier into the season and hopefully the playoffs.

I’m optimistic about this hire and hoping he brings Munchak with him. Our o-line has never been better than under Munch.

  11. I’m alright with the hire because regardless of who the quarterback is next year they’re going to need to be able to pound the rock to make it easier on Pickett/Rudolph/???

They have a nice HB1 and HB1A right now if Smith comes in with a new line coach and the offensive line goes from okay to good it’ll take a lot of pressure off whoever is the starting quarterback next year. It’ll also help the defense because they’ll be able to rest more.

  12. Fans: We need to get back to running the damn ball and playing Steelers football!

Team: OK, here’s a coach who can help us do that.
    Fans: WHAT A TERRIBLE HIRE!

  13. Does this mean the idea is to have Najee and Jaylen wear out the defense and have Kenny serve as a game manager, and occasionally throw for a 15 yard pass, while not turning it over?
It’s boring to watch, but it has produced Super Bowl rings.

  14. Hear me out…

Justin fields for the corpse of chase claypool and a packet of cigarettes

    Draft a C in the 1st round

Draft a CB in the 2nd round

    Win?

  15. These hard ceiling statements ignore the base rate of success.

Not having Mahomes seems to have a pretty hard ceiling, but you still have to manage and run the team like that isn’t the case.

If you’re getting to the ccg, like Smith did with the Titans, your scheme is competitive.

There is also very little meaningful difference between a playoff game and a tough regular season game. The question is mostly if you can win *any* tough games.

I’m not saying I have a strong opinion on the hire, I just hate this kind of sweeping analysis, because it’s obviously stupid if you think about it for 5 seconds.

  16. I actually like the hire but I’m still not a believer in this team with Pickett/Rudolph.

  17. I am cautiously optimistic at this point. He did turn Ryan Tannehill of all people into a probowl quarterback. I don’t want to automatically assume someone sucks before they call a single play here.

  18. Honestly, you guys need to let Rudolph compete for the job next year. I know he sucked in the past, but he looked good at the end of this past year. Why does he seem to be in the dog house?

  19. The Steelers should fix their running game. It will also improve their pass protection. Eventually, they’ll get a shot at an elite starting quarterback. May take years.

  20. I know a lot of the comments are on QB. I was amazed by the TE play in both Championship games. I hope Smith can make proper use of Muuth and Washington

  21. Trai was the worst starter/swing lineman on a superbowl team. Time to stop listening to him.

He’s a product of right place right time.

  22. I really think a major issue with the Steelers philosophy that no one brings up is their inability to look past the next 17 games. You saw it with the Najee and Kenny picks, and you could argue the decision to keep Canada. To me this is them doubling down on an outdated style of offense, because it’s the offense they’re currently most equipped to run with current personnel. Who knows how Smith will do here, and hopefully he does well. But I was really hoping for a hire that would show they’re serious about catching up to modern NFL offenses, and that’s not what I’m getting from this move.

  23. The difference is that our defense is better than TN. Good defense wins matches. A good offense can still lose a fumble and get wrecked off that momentum. Just look at Detroit, their defense could not stop the 49ers and all it took was two good plays.

  24. He’s right.

But Kenny really sucks and the Steelers don’t have Derrick Henry and AJ Brown in their primes. I don’t know why people even think they will come close to what Tennessee was able to do.

And when you consider how much better AJ Brown got when he left the Titans and got into a modern offense, that doesn’t bode well for Pickens.

Lucking into a wildcard spot and then getting embarrassed in the first round is the absolute ceiling for this Mike Tomlin team, like it’s been for the last decade.
