[Davidi] Blue Jays counting on internal gains to raise ceiling in winter that maintained floor

  1. “Maintaining the floor” is a poor offseason approach for a team that finished well below the division champs and runner ups. I agree it’s reasonable to expect *some* improvement from the 5 guys who way underperformed, and I am happy with the Turner signing, but it’s pretty disappointing if we really are done.

I understand not wanting to bet on any of the remaining big free agents, but I hope Ross can spin a trade. Luis Robert or Luis Arraez would make me very happy going into spring.

  2. This is a pretty bad bet IMO because you should also count on some regression from the elite starting pitching

  3. Reading these articles and tweets by davidi and BNS makes me depressed. They are constantly trying to temper fan expectations. The part that pisses me off is he mentioned our subpar farm system which cant yield impact trades. Thats a big indictment on atkins imo. We should have been better positioned there.

  4. We have a Brad Pitt moment right now.

There’s a bunch of people at Blue Jay Way sitting around a table thinking about how they’re going to replace 6.4 bWAR. Jonah Hill is in the corner muttering Justin Turner over and over.

Justin Turner gets them 2 back.

IKF is capable of giving them 2 back.

Vlad was only good for 2 last year, but was good for 6+ in ’21 and just under 4 in ’22.

Is that a solid strategy? I don’t know. It might work. But then Springer might continue to decline, and we likely won’t get almost 4 bWAR out of KK again. I really think they needed to get another solid OF – not Soler, they’d need someone to actually play in the field. Ideally, a 3 or 4 bWAR type player as insurance against other decline on the team.

I hope they’re not done yet.

  5. >Kiner-Falefa is either the backfill for Matt Chapman or Whit Merrifield, depending on his ultimate usage.

IKF isn’t good enough to replace Chapman on his own. Now he’s gotta replace both of these dudes?

  6. How did the offseason maintain the floor? The offence is objectively worse and was unwatchable last season.

I don’t understand Atkins’ infinite leash despite perpetual disappointment, big league underperformance and poor prospect development.

  7. Some people thought the team was actually improved with just signing KK IKF and Turner
