[Jim Racalto] has an interesting take on this new hire. Honestly don’t hate this move, but don’t love it. However, I am excited to see how it plays out. There’s no denying Arthur Smith as an OC was good at his job. Let’s just hope there’s no more jet sweeps

  1. This hire does move the needle if Kenny or mason (if he resigns) is at 80% of tannehill. It’s actually sad that I’m not confident in having average qb play. But our oline and rb committee when healthy are top 3. Our last 8 weeks we were top 10 in rushing which is impressive considering how many busts we’ve had against top 5 defenses.

  2. If he doesn’t work out, then he doesn’t work out and I can live with that. I’m just happy that a change, any change, was made. Maybe we get worse, but we can’t stay where we are either.

  3. I’m honestly not sure how to feel about it. On one hand, it’s not Canada, Van Pelt or an internal hire. One the other hand, there are some big concerns with his time in Atlanta, and my biggest concern is that this is a passing league and we continue to try and build around the run. I guess we will see.

  4. Yep, the knee-jerk negativity is pretty over the top. People comparing him to Canada were exposing themselves, because it’s not a comparable hire in any way. It was just spiraling fans frothing at the mouth at that point.

Not sure if it will be a fit, but ffs give it a year, people. It might not be an exciting hire, but this guy had a run first offense that made a very mediocre QB look good in TN. For better or worse, that’s what Tomlin wants, to a T. He wants to control TOP with a reliable run game and win on a top 10 D, just like every other Steelers HC for the past 50 years.

  5. Two seasons as OC is such a small sample. But, it’s OK for proponents to argue that the numbers are great and anyone who disagrees is just whining. IMO, this hire will not get this team over the top. It’s just more run first mentality that doesn’t work, ask Baltimore.

  6. As a UF fan, we have a saying “nobody suffers winning like gator fans”

Basically, even when we get exactly what we want, we complain about it…..

I’m starting to think the steelers do this too.

  7. I have no issues with Arthur Smith being hired from a scheme or philosophy standpoint.

My biggest question is we just saw this guy’s offense fail with poor QB play, how is that improving under Kenny? QB play will make or break this hire, and I’m worried Smith is already being dealt a bad hand.

  8. How do you separate and predict Belichek from Brady?
    Carroll from Lynch?
    Tomlin from Ben?
    Shanahan from Deebo?
    [Smith from Henry?]
Time and experience. That’s the only way. And so far time and experience dictate it will take more than just this one hire. History remebers Lebeau as HC turned good coordinator. But it doesn’t remember the Bad HC turned bad coordinator. No offensive Steelers coach has given hope in many years. Trust is earned. So no complaints just yet with no evidence yet. Also, not enough to establish hope either.

  9. Doubt he will have any leeway to run things on his own. He will have to work within a set philosophy. Not come and blow things up.

  10. My issue with the hire was that he doesn’t have a track record of developing a QB. I’m sure his run schemes are great and could help, but this team is going no where without a modern passing game and a huge leap in the QB play.

  11. The sexy hires fail all the time. People will find a reason to complain about anything. Omar & Coach know ball- this is the direction their minds went in moving the team forward w/ the personnel on hand.

Hate it, love it, indifferent opinions mean nothing. This is the team in the arena.

Let’s go wear black & yellow proud

  12. Welcome to the US…. The dumbest people are often the loudest and are excited to display their ignorance for any kind of attention.

  13. Think about this. With Canada, we were managing above average seasons. That’s with an elementary offense. You can’t tell me this man can be worse than that.

  14. idk im pretty happy with the hire. The Titans were clearly at their best when he was OC, why would anyone discredit that?

  15. There are a lot of fans with a lot of different opinions on who should have the OC job. I think almost everyone recognized that the Steelers desperately needed to go with an outside hire this time around but that doesn’t mean that every outside candidate is a good idea or that every fan will be or should be excited about them.

  16. I’m very negative on this move because it has been ensured that we stay at this same level.

His Titans offense, outside of King Henry being King Henry, was insanely meh. And that team wasn’t enough to threaten someone like KC. Once teams could focus on the run game in Atlanta as he didn’t have Henry and bad QB’s, he couldn’t do anything….and guess what, the offense was insanely meh despite all the talent they had.

Like, I don’t think it’s a TERRIBLE hire, just, another hire of “we’re content about where we are, let’s make sure we stay where we are”.

Just doesn’t move the needle a single bit, just 0 promise of Tomlin taking a risk to try and get us over the hump, the stagnation for the 7th year in a row is the standard. And people yet again falling for the “but-but give him a chancee!” trap is part of the problem.

  17. The concern is the Steelers offensive “talent” is closer to Atlanta than Tennessee under Smith. Steelers don’t have an rb like Henry, a wr like AJ Brown and Pickett is closer to Ridder than Tannehill.

  18. We bought a Toyota Camry when people wanted a Porsche. We’ve been driving a broken down Hyundai for the last few years.

Dudes gonna be here for a decade. He wants stability and had already flamed out as a HC. The other guys we could hire worked at great shops (Rams/49ers) but in mid-level roles of QB coach or pass game coordinator. This dudes a high floor and maybe a low ceiling hire but we wanted guys with high ceilings who would either flame out running the show on their own or crush it for 3 years and leave for a HC gig.

  19. My main concern is he seems like a massive douchebag and from what I’ve read from fans who are more familiar with him, that is exactly the case. So my concern is culture, the players will know he’s a cunt and it could hurt the locker room. I am hoping for the complete opposite!

  20. He’ll either be good or bad, but the people comparing this to Canada are delusional.

  21. This is the only take to have at the minute. I don’t know if it’ll work out but his last outing at the position was pretty fucking good he got Tannehill 10,000 yards and north of 70 touchdowns in 39 games, in a run first offense… If we average 255ish yards a game at QB while having a top 5 running offense I think we will be doing just fine. 🤷‍♂️

  22. It’s what they read and regurgitate from the Pittsburgh sportswriters. Bunch of assholes

  23. Isn’t this guy famous for basically lining Derrek Henry up 3 yards further back then normal so he could get a full head of steam before the line of scrimmage?

  24. It’ll never be enough and the court of public opinion will always speak loudly that’s why I can’t watch any sports talk tv anymore or watch any pre post game there’s just too much chatter about every little thing. I just tune in for actual gameplay and that’s it

  25. I’m not gonna talk shit until I see what this guy can do. Thing is smith’s carrer is now in tomlins hands. If Pickett is qb1, Smith won’t last long. A good running game can only take u so far. A good running game can open up the passing game but only if the d fears the qb. Defenses don’t fear Kenny even a little. Otherwise defenses will just stack the line and then even the run game will suck. I hope it all works out but only time will tell
