Former Lion Jahlani Tavai finished the season as the 4th ranked linebacker per PFF

I know he’s a meme around here but pretty impressive even if you’re not a huge believer of pff.

Turns out he was the patriots type player they thought he was. But also turns out Matt Patricia is a shitty coach who couldn’t develop shit.

  1. some guys need a different look. In this case it was following the guy that drafted him back to the Patriots

  2. I knew it. As soon as he was traded.

Belichick used his Sith Powers one last time for Jahlani Tavai.

  3. I guess he needed time to develop and the right fit. We cut him back in 2021, not like he immediately got better after

  4. Lb position is an enigma really obviously some guys are simply too good but most just need the right scheme and coaching.

  5. Everyone needs to realize this is a team sport. It takes coaches, schemes, leadership and is insanely difficult to succeed against a very small percentage of people in the world with this skill set. He didn’t work out in detroit but the difference between most nfl players is so minimal you may be an abject failure in one system and excel in another. Good luck tavai , go get your nut.

  6. Good for him. If he was drafted in the 4th or later, no one would have been disappointed in him. He didn’t choose his draft position.

  7. I don’t understand Bill he figures out how to make the most out of other teams busts. But can’t draft at all.

  8. Yep, no surprise. I’ve been on that bandwagon since we drafted him (you can see my comment history).

The guy can play and any questions about athleticism, while not top tier, is early squelched by watching tape.

Same thing about TJ. Poor coaching + personal business decisions, but TJ is objectively a top tier TE.

  9. I mean he’s not bad he’s just slow. Patricia for some reason thought it was a smart idea to have a linebacker that runs a 5.0 40 on an island by himself in man coverage multiple times a game. Like he can read well and he sees the game decently but physical limitations are a real thing.

Expecting players to magically become guys they aren’t and then getting mad when they don’t become that guy is part of what made Patricia such a terrible coach.

  10. It really makes me wonder how good Bob Quinn actually was at evaluating talent. He put together 4/5ths of this O-Line, Tavai is apparently playing like a top 5 LB in the league, A’Shawn Robinson was playing well before Patricia got to town, Golladay had a couple of good years in Detroit… it’s just too bad he had to get his buddy in the door too
