  1. Holz joined Nebraska in 2007 after former Raiders and Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan offered him the gig. **Holz had a relationship with Callahan after playing with Callahan’s son at De La Salle High School (Danville, Calif).**

After a year with the Cornhuskers, Holz took a job as an offensive and operations assistant at Stanford, working closely with the team’s quarterback at the time, Andrew Luck. He coached at Stanford from 2008-10.

Holz spent the next 10 years on the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders staff, working under a variety of head coaches, including Hue Jackson, Dennis Allen, Tony Sparano, Jack Del Rio and Jon Gruden/Rich Bisaccia.

  2. Only so many OCs you can get when they won’t be calling the plays. I’m trusting Callahan on this one.

  3. Really wasn’t expecting much for an OC, considering Callahan is calling the plays. Not much to say, could be solid, could be ass, who knows.

  4. Some of you guys forget how wide open Jags dudes were against us last year before Trevor Lawrence showed he wasn’t good at football anymore.

  5. He hired a sidekick who won’t ever gun for his job.

Let’s face it cally wants to be HC/OC and this hire is mostly friendly window dressing for the position.

  6. Would have preferred Studesville, cause he provides a bit more balance to the offensive philosophy, but they are going all in on developing Levis as a passer so it’s okay. Definitely feels like the 5th best lineman type of hire.

  7. People talk about the cronyism, nepotism, and hiring buddies. If who they hire capable and competent, then I don’t care. But if they hire people that underperform but they hang around because of relationships, then it’s time to call them on it.

With that said, I’m pretty indifferent on the hire.

  8. I’m not worried about them being buddies.

Hiring your buddies isn’t a bad thing as long as they don’t suck (which was vrabels problem). The more important hire was dc and they went outside the network to find a good one.

  9. Oh Brian and Nick are HS friends. I’m down for it.
Got the DC we all wanted, BC will be calling the plays

  10. I really wish Callahan had chosen someone with playcalling experience in the NFL to be on his staff, since he himself has never done so. Hopefully he has the wherewithal to pick up an offensive quality control guy (like Schwartz had been for our d a couple of seasons ago).

  11. A coach, especially a brand new hire, sometimes makes hires with guys they’re familiar and have previous experience with which makes life a bit easier for both.

I’m not worried what the response will be if a coach doesn’t do their job adequately, the Titans have literally fired the last two HCs because they refused to cut out the dead weight. Hopefully Callahan is above it this time. You’re also not going to get a home run hire when the new HC is a previous OC and will be calling plays. This is a spot where you want to kinda groom someone that knows how you want to approach that side of the ball.

  12. I’m a little lukewarm on this. Holz was my least favorite candidate out of the 3. I’m also not going to pretend that the OC hire isn’t important. In Nick’s defense, Trevor Lawrence had a rough year last year in terms of missing passes and a lot of guys were wide open. This is one of those hirings that I will have to wait and see on but it’s not necessarily one I’m going to hate on either.

  13. Man we better hope all these first time coaches are gonna work out because if not, boy we are in for a world of pain and misery for the foreseeable future
