  1. The thing that sucks about this is that it’s easy to say “eh just 2 FTs, it’s a long game”… except this can change a lot more. There’s the obvious stuff like if this puts an important player into early foul trouble, but then there’s the psychological aspect. The defense is basically being told to play even softer defense, and the offensive player is going to be even more confident in driving the next time (compared to a guy who misses near the rim and then settles for a jumper next time).

    This call sucks

  2. How to trick a ref in the NBA.
    1. Jump and twist your body in an unnatural way.
    2. ???????
    3. Profit (with free throws)

  3. It’s so weird the players that refs just seem to universally decide deserve a very friendly whistle. Not even implying its a conspiracy, it’s just that they’re so ready to blow a whistle for Butler, and clam up when someone like Kawhi (who plays pretty similarly) gets clobbered.

  4. This play right here was why I hated high school refs. I would get the same bs line from them and coach “They whistle the swipe down” mf if I only get ball on the swipe down maybe don’t penalize good defense. Ref should be watching the big orange circle and the arm handling it, not the help side defender who’s halfway out of the whistling ref’s sight behind the ballhandler and doesn’t leave their feet

  5. Surprised they didn’t wait to blow the whistle until after they saw if Jimmy made or missed it.

  6. It usually annoys me when players harass the refs after a call but I wouldn’t blame Kuz for getting himself ejected in response to this bs

  7. I don’t understand this line of thinking from the refs that leads to calls like this. It’s a player known to bait fouls, often by tricking the refs in some way. They must watch film of refereeing as part of their training and see it, so they continue to give the soft fouls?

I don’t mean this just for Jimmy Butler. The same applies for Trae Young, Embiid, prime Harden, more recently Shai.

  8. Refs doubling down, when caught with a mistake is remarkable. Anyone else at a regular job would be reprimanded.

  9. Holy shit. Even when some guy is slacking off defence and isn’t even putting in any effort on the play, he STILL gets a whistle.

  10. The reffing in the NBA has reached a point where it’s a joke. The league has to do something, it’s getting out of hand.

  11. Remember when Butler kicked Aaron Gordon in the balls and Gordon got called for the foul?

  12. You know its a rough season for the Heat when they using their ref booster card vs the Wizards

  13. It’s always surprised me how certain players get an amazing whistle. Jimmy butler is chief among them.

  14. The NBA officiating training and discipline process is fine. It must be kept secret. We must not speak of it. We must not criticize it. We must trust that, despite a literally infinite supply of evidence to the contrary, that the best thing is that they police themselves behind the scenes and that we accept that failure will be the norm, and that we gamble on this based on purely random foul calls.

Yep, perfect. Nothing to see. Do not speak of it, just pay money for games and smile.
