Good breakdown on why to avoid LB Patrick Queen

TLDR: He and Harris play the same position.

  1. He is the same boat as Tremaine Edmund’s. They look okay until another linebacker comes in to do everything and their responsibilities filter down to 1-2 things. Then they excel. Bad fit for us

  2. hmm there is other off ball linebackers that are his size and speed. But I think he would demand to much for being just a good mike for us, honestly still better than evans. I think this breakdown is a bit meh because he did have a great rookie season without help. It’s in the 3-4 system which means he has to shed more linemen. The breakdown is more of a opinion. I think he would still go good as a mike in a 4-3. Mike in 3-4 is a complete different story and he did it decently underweight. He is a little more compact than harrison weighing more and being 1 inch shorter.

In a 4-3 I can see him playing mike, in the 3-4 you want him to be your smaller ILB of the two like ravens. Also note he had his first two years playing in a 3-4 mike. Coming to 4-3 would be way easier for him also being older now in his prime. Again not for signing him but feel like this is a bad take on him. He would still be a better signing than evans being cheaper and would help more.

  3. Interesting. This was a guy I wanted, but that makes a lot of sense now to look elsewhere

  4. I have a better breakdown.

In today’s NFL. Non pass rushing specialist LBs are the RB of Defense. Many times a great DL in front of them frees them up to fly to the ball / make tackles.

For the Texans, aside from the Christian Harris / Queen position redundancy, you have the best LB coach in the league as our HC. He made Fred Warner (according to Fred Warner), improved Christian Harris tremendously, and had Blake Cashman playing at a very high level (who isn’t the most raw talented LB in the league, profile fits more on ST).

Just like Saquan Barkley I’ll say the same thing about Queen – great players. Use the money you’d pay them for DT, more depth at WR, could sign 2 strong RBs for the price of Barkley (to go with Pearce and Singletary), a pro bowl safety (if there is one out there), an upgrade at CB, a few strong rotational DE or bring Greenard back.

So my point- not downplaying how good these players are, I’m highlighting that there is way better ROI out there.

Instead of Queen (16.75 M per which is what he’s slated to get) you could have:

    Stephen Nelson at 7M per
    Javon Kinlaw at 5M per
    AJ Espensa at 4M per

(Used projected cap numbers from sports trac)

That second list of 3 players make a substantially larger impact than Patrick Queen.

  5. While I respect Patrick’s talent, Harris under DeMeco is an experiment I’m willing to gamble on instead of signing Patrick.

  6. Texans largely run Nickel which is a 4-2-5 alignment. Very rarely in a 4-3 formation.

In a 4-2 front the LB’s are usually mirrors of each other.

Why people still talk about base defensive fronts when they are largely unused is weird to me.
