  1. I remember the dark days when Markstrom perpetually let in the first shot and frequently had a save % less than .90 but I also totally agree with you

  2. Wolf should not be seen as a starter yet, and he will need a mentor, but the Flames likely can find an appropriate player if they decide to trade Markstrom. While a contender should not bank on them, there are always veteran goalies that can do the job signing 2 or 3 year deals with an AAV under $3 million.

  3. I really don’t understand this argument. Markstrom has 2 years left on his contract, at age 35 and age 36. The Flames are retooling or rebuilding or whatever term you want to use these next 2 years. They don’t need a vezina goalie or even a super reliable one to be honest. They do need one in like 2027, 2028, when Markstrom is damn near retired anyways

  4. Everyone knows he’s 34 and the will be need to be replaced at some point right. Is he dragging this roster to a cup final this year or the next 2?

  5. He’s 34 and having his best season ever just after having his worst. Sell high. We might as well get the best draft pick possible, too. Especially next year.

You should only be in favor of keeping Markstrom if you think his play is so good he can singlehandedly make us contenders, and I don’t think anyone believes that. I also think the whole mentor for Wolf thing is overhyped.

  6. Old heads will also remember the bleak stretch between Mike Vernon and Miika Kiprusoff. Good goaltending is a rarity in Calgary. I’d be concerned if we were looking to offload Marky at this point

  7. What if we keep Marky and he goes back to playing like he did last year? We’re gonna regret not selling high on him if we don’t. I seriously doubt we’re contending within the next 2 seasons.

  8. Karri Ramo. Jonas Hiller. Brian Elliot (Moose). Cam Talbot. Mike Smith. David Rittiche. Uhhh, i know im missing a bunch but these are the top of my head

  9. We are not going to be winning any Stanley Cup in the next few years. Sell him off for assets. Develop the younger team to contend. Seems like a no brainer.

  10. Remember Markstrom last year though? His play this season doesn’t automatically mean it’ll be the same next year and the year after. This is a sell high opportunity.

  11. Hello, devils fan here. Please, for the love of all that is holy, do not, I repeat DO NOT, trade him to us. We can’t afford to keep trading our future to you guys.

Also, tell Shengo I says hello and that we miss him.

  12. You could get Halak once Marky is gone..what’s actually going on with that dude? Lost track of him but I know he was looking for a team some time ago

  13. There’s a lot of talk about “sell high” with Markstrom, but I think it’s being underestimated how important a good mentor is for a young goalie.

Saros got YEARS behind Rinne because he was ready to take over.

Price and Fleury both got thrown into the fire before they were ready and it took them a decent amount of time to figure out the NHL game.

If you trade Markstom and run Vladar/Wolf tandem you have 76 games of NHL experience in net.

You need guys that can mentor and shield Wolf.

Can you get a haul for Markstrom? Yes.

Do you want to risk development for that haul? I wouldn’t.
