If the Packers wanted to bring back Savage, Nijman, or Nixon for 2024 it would have been most cost effective to have extended them before their void provisions kicked in. Extending would have saved: -Savage: $4.1M -Nijman: $1.9M -Nixon: $1.1M They didn’t – They are likely gone.

  1. Ingalls has been wrong many many times, but Nijman is likely gone but Savage is a toss up and Nixon is likely back mostly for special teams

  2. This is good news. Love what Nixon did for us but sometimes his hero ball mentality would hurt the Packers. Savage never worked out. It is what it is

Edit: apparently the post is from an unreliable source.

  3. Still think savage and Nixon are toss ups. It’s not all a numbers game. The circumstances have changed with the new DC hire. Not to mention they are both defensive backs depth wise. I would be surprised to see both go.

  4. If they’d resigned Savage for 5million that would have just been 900K in additional cap hit this season. over what they pay now. I guess Gute just wanted to move on and catchup on those void years.

  5. I would love for Savage to come back, I still think he’s capable of being a great free safety, he’s definitely the spirit in it at least

  6. If I’m understanding this correctly, we don’t “save” money by extending them. We just gain a little more flexibility in moving that money around. But you could essentially achieve the same result by just negotiating a new contract that is more heavily backloaded.

So, yes, not extending these guys is probably not a sign we are dead set on keeping them. But I don’t see how it means “they are likely gone.”

With all of these guys, we would only want them if the price is right. But all of them probably at least feel they have some kind of market. So the only way (likely) that we get them at a price point that is palatable is to let them test the market and come back if they can’t get the deal they want. You lose that leverage trying to extend before free agency.

  7. We have to bring back Nixon. I know he took everything to the 20 but we have been missing a return game for so fucking long. Why give it up. Unless they want reed returning everything which I think is a bad idea. He’s a star at WR

  8. Here’s a thought…. pushing salary caps further and further down the line doesnt allow you to properly build a roster. Theyre eating it now so they don’t have to later. It’s always been to plan for 2025
