I think Pete made a mistake saying he isnβt setting a deadline and is happy to negotiate throughout the season. A big part of these negotiations is the belief that whoever comes to the table first loses the power because they set the baseline. The Mets donβt want to come to the table first and set something so low Pete is insulted, but also know whatever number they write down will be the starting point to negotiate up from. Boras meanwhile wants Pete to go to FA so there is no incentive on his end to send a number over to the team.
