Thoughts on this? (pertaining to Brock Bowers)

Saw an interesting trend regarding drafting TEs in the 1st round recently and curious what everyone thinks how this could pertain to us potentially drafting Brock Bowers.

  1. Tightend is notoriously one of the most difficult positions to transition to in the NFL. Even some of the best TEs the league has ever seen didn’t break out their 3rd year or later. Bowers has a lot of potential obviously but anyone who thinks he’ll come in and immediately be Travis Kelce is being delusional.

  2. Considering that the only one of those guys who’s ‘Elite’ on a rookie deal is Hockenson, I’d assert that drafting TE in the 1st round is a crapshoot.

  3. I had stated before and got down voted that it seems almost every year there’s a new generational TE but they don’t live up to the hype. Here’s proof.

  4. IMO Bowers needs to stop being looked at exclusively as a TE. He lined up everywhere in Georgia’s offense. Slot, In-line, Out wide, FB, HB etc. You name it, he played it. I mean for god sake the guy was taking end arounds 75 yards for a TD as a TE. He’s such a unique player. You can build a whole offense around him.

None of those guy’s on the list are even close to the level of prospect coming out besides Pitts. Bowers came in as a Freshmen and dominated the SEC as a TE and was essentially Georgia’s whole offense. That’s very rare to see.

Bowers is special and I really hope because of the narrative around TE’s in the 1st round, and because he’s going to measure in smaller then most people expect at the combine, that he falls to us at 15.

  5. I don’t see what everyone else does, he’s a very limited blocker, straight line speed, no burst or quick agile moves.

  6. Hard to draft one in the 1st. His salary would be top 10 at the position from day 1 and it’s a notoriously slow starting position.

I would still draft Bowers, but it is an interesting conundrum.

  7. I still can’t imagine him being there for us. It doesn’t make sense. We’d be stupid not to take him if he’s on the board but also every team outside the front 4 are stupid for letting him fall to us. The last thing the league needs is Richardson with a home run threat safety valve

  8. The risk with drafting a TE in the first round is that unless they are an elite player in the NFL, they’re immediately overpaid because TE pay is so much lower than other positions, and their rookie deal isn’t far off from the high end contracts at the position.

However, that means there is tremendous surplus value if the player does end up being an elite TE.

  9. I feel like this is kinda similar to the Ohio State QB argument and my stance is draft the player not the helmet. I don’t necessarily care how those other players turned out if *this* one checks the boxes

  10. None of those guys were the best player in their draft. Bowers is the best player in this year’s draft.

    Am I a scout? No.

Did I see Bowers play every home game in college? Yes.

Unless you guys trade up, you won’t get him.

    Cheers

  11. If you can explain to me what Noah Fant’s career has to do with Brock Bowers’ potential, I’d love to hear it.

  12. Dont think this means anything. Bowers is better than every prospect here but name Pitts and Pitts already has a 1k yard season under him.

  13. I’d still take Bowers if he’s available. The guy is more than a TE, he’s a playmaker. He’s a threat anywhere he is lined up on offense.

  14. Let him fall to 15, then. Yes.

You take the chance. Dude was basically just an offensive weapon at Georgia. Take the chance, especially in Steichen’s offense.

  16. TE just isn’t a premium position imo I don’t wanna spend a pick in the top half of the draft on one.
