Friedman on 32 Thoughts discussion the Tanev and Hanifin.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/podcasts/32-thoughts/

Some good insight, summarizes a lot of what we’ve heard.

* Chris Tanev asked to go to a contender. The teams interested were Dallas, Toronto, Vancouver, and Edmonton, although ask for the latter three was higher. For a rental, Dallas was never going to make a trade that involved a first rounder or their best three prospects of Stankoven, Bourke, or Bichsel. Marek likes Grushnikov, very physical. Not a lot of offense. Jay McKee loves him, says that he works harder than anyone else. Likely need to take their time readying him to the NHL as he is still very green. Friedman also thinks that the Flames made a last ditch effort to extend Tanev, but at that point he had already decided to move on.

* Hanifin appearing to trying to move a trade to a preferred team like Tampa. Friedman doesn’t elaborate on what this means (nor does he mention Seravalli’s comments). There still isn’t much noise on any trade, but Friedman suspects that Calgary will need to decide whether to make the best trade they can as a rental, or let him talk to teams. Thinks that Washington might be a team that is interested as they want to do a big shakeup.

* Calgary considering adding a cheap defenceman.

  1. I wonder why Hanifin hasn’t been allowed to talk to other teams yet?

It’s been pretty clear for awhile he didn’t want to sign here

  2. I could see a 1st,Lohrei,Grzelyck and maybe something extra for Hanifin to Boston

The return will be underwhelming unfortunately for what his value is simply cuz 3-4 teams who he likes and they want him don’t have much. Idk how Tampa can give us any decent package especially since they won’t give up Isaac Howard

Maybe 2026 1st, Cernak and their second best prospect?

Washington is interesting tho since they have some good young players

    Connor McMichael or Cristall

  3. Personally I like that Conny expected better packages from Toronto, Edmonton, and Vancouver for Tanev. You don’t give your rivals a good deal on a player and you definitely don’t give your former GM a good deal for a player.

  4. Yeah, it’s looking more and more like the return for Hanifin is going to be immensely underwhelming, especially if you were thinking/hoping he’d bring back a blue chip piece or something. At this point, if Conroy can bring back a 1st and a B level prospect, I’d consider it a win and happily turn the page.

Also, don’t see the point of adding a defenceman unless it’s another Pachal like waiver claim. Save the assets for the draft and just give the guys on the farm a legit chance.

  5. You just need to make the best trade available. He only has a few teams he can block a trade to. Outside of that send him to whoever gives you the most on return. If it’s Washington then so be it.

In theory allowing him to sign an extension should increase a return, but he reportedly only wants to sign with teams with limited assets (TB, Boston etc.)

  6. It’s funny Toronto and Edmonton believe they’ve got a shot at the cup 😂
