  1. We’re always in the market, I don’t think anyone doubts that. I appreciate that they’re trying but eventually they have to actually close a deal. Starting to feel like Francis and his inability to ever get a good goalie.

  2. I don’t like the constant barrage of trade deadline talk, complaints and drama that Happens every year.

We have nothing we can do except let Don Cook.

Overall I’m feeling a little better this year than I did at this point last year.

The offense has cooled off, but we’re not totally relying on our D men for goals like we were for a stretch last year.

  3. The Pettersson near-deal shows at least that DW is thinking big and instead of “we like our team” it’s “we like our team and would like it even more if we made a big, impactful addition” Whether there is in fact a big deal to be made remains to be seen but I definitely like the thinking that the top-6 isn’t good enough right now to go all the way.

  4. I can’t remember NHL rules. I know Don doesn’t do short term rentals but does the NHL allow sign(extension) and trades midseason? Wondering if with some of the rental candidates out there if we could have them locked prior to the trade if that would change things up.

  5. Seems to be a ton of smoke with the Ducks with the GM being at the games this week and the Canes helping them close the deal with the Leafs. Henrique/Vatrano get ready to learn Carolina buddies.

  6. Let’s say Guentzel comes to Carolina. Where does that put our line combos? You’d think he’s playing top line minutes, so here’s my thought:

    1. Guentzel-Aho-Turbo
    2. Svech-Drury-Necas
    3. Jarvis-Staal-Martinook
    4. Bunts-KK-Fast/Noesen

Just off the top combo, as far as Fast/Noesen, I’ve liked Noesen’s play more recently, guy works hard and fits the system really well. Anybody have any thoughts here?

  7. Not saying we shouldn’t do anything, but I think it’s worth mentioning that this team just went to the ECF. From that team –

    We lost:
    Stastny, MacEachern, Gostisbehere

Today, in their place, we have:
    Svechnikov healthy, Bunting, Orlov

I still think we could greatly improve with a real 2C, but I keep forgetting at least how much better this team is on paper than last years team and that has been reassuring

  8. Canes want a forward with term.  Forwards who have been speculated as available that have term are Zegras, Buchnevich, Vatrano, Reilly Smith and Mittelstadt.

I’d wager the rough costs are:

    Smith – 3rd + B/C prospect

    Vatrano – 2nd + 3rd

    Buchnevich – Morrow + 1st

    Mittelstadt – Drury + 1st

    Zegras – Necas + 2nd

  9. Either Guentzel or Henrique would be a huge add. Wouldn’t be mad about Tarasenko either.

The problem is clearing the roster spot. Who are you gonna trade from the current forward group? Assume Aho, Svech, Turbo, Jarvis, Staal, Drury, Noesen, Martinook, Bunting and Necas are all very safe, as those players are all pretty integral to the team’s success this year, or just untouchable for other reasons. That leaves KK, Fast and Lemieux. KK is the most valuable of those three but he’s also the one whose departure would have the biggest negative impact on the locker room.

It’s tough man, I don’t envy Waddell having to make a decision like this.

Aho/Henrique/Drury/Staal would be the best center depth in the league, most likely.

  10. Y’all. Don Waddell has a strategy. And he’s fucking incredible at his job.

I genuinely believe the Stanley Cup is the most difficult trophy to win in all the major American sports. As the 2006 and 2010 Canes themselves show- if you want to be a successful franchise, you simply CANNOT go all in on Cup rentals.

Look at Vegas’s moves last year. They picked up a handful of depth guys to shore up their deeper lines. They didn’t trade away their promising RFAs and futures to get their hands on a $8mill rental.

Our FO has a clear strategy of building a team in the offseason and looking to fill holes at the deadline. They, wisely, are unwilling to mortgage our future to pray for a cup. They would rather we are ALWAYS a threat to the cup and play the odds than fuck our franchise for the next four years because we’re having a good regular season.

We have a phenomenal team who would probably be leading the conference if we hadn’t had some awful goalie luck in the early to mid season.

Trust this front office. This franchise has never been as successful as we are right now. You don’t know shit compared to these guys.
