[Jeff Howe] Echoing others, the Patriots are very high on Baker Mayfield, sources have said. But I’d consider that one a long shot for a variety of reasons (Pats in position to draft a QB, Mayfield’s free agent contract, likely several other suitors, etc.). Never say never. Just not likely.

  1. You’d think Baker would want a job that gives him short-term job security and the best contract he can get.

Maybe the Pats can compete on the contract end, but they will almost definitely be drafting a QB somewhere in the first couple rounds, who will almost certainly be expected to replace Baker by next year.

  2. Baker on a real deal, Mike Evans, draft MHJ or trade down and take Alt. Draft a QB on day 2.

As much as I love Daniels this feels like a much safer and more “responsible” way to start the rebuild.

  3. what does signing baker do for you long term? 3 years 30 to 40 a year and be a middling team and we waste MHJs cheap contract? I just don’t really get the vision. seems like a bad move

  4. So basically, the front office is me: likes Baker as a player, but realistic in knowing he isn’t the answer for this team’s needs.

  5. Since we will be the new Packers, we will start a veteran and groom a rookie for 5 years, so we can have Baker and a rookie QB.

  6. It’s just not a match, this isn’t a team ready to compete. Rookie qb contract lets you build up the rest of the offense and the team. Dropping 30+ mil on a vet who doesn’t elevate your team makes no sense.

  7. Only way Baker makes sense is if it were a 1 year deal in case we didn’t want to throw our drafted QB in the fire right away. But Baker is 28 and wants a real starter job not a veteran mentor role.

The other route is Baker on a longer contract + MHJ which would be a great way to win 7-8 games a year for the next 4 seasons

  8. Sign Baker. Sign Jimmy G as a backup since he knows the Patriot system. Draft MHJ. Sign Mike Evans.

Defense is already top 10. Boom. Contender again.

  9. If Tampa is even dumb enough to let Baker walk away in free agency I don’t think he’ll really want to play for New England. Baker needs top tier weapons and good protection to succeed, if he does sign to New England he’s just nailing the coffin to his career

  10. Kinda feel for Baker going around the league like a backup QB. He deserves a home for 3-5 years. Wherever that is.

  11. Get any vet QB

    Draft MHJ

Jump back up in the first. Get a QB in the second. Draft a QB next year. We are statically going to be terrible again next year, so we’ll probably be in a good position to try to draft next years hot QB. We have plenty of options rather than Maye.

  12. Mayfield costs escrow money.

Draft pick costs rookie chump change.

Bob Kraft loves whatever QB is available at 3.

  13. I’m here for it. Draft MHJ. Bring in a vet. Draft a QB in the second or later. Draft another QB next year.

  14. Why would he leave Tampa Bay when it’s the best he’s played his entire career? It makes no sense for Baker. He’s been mediocre to bad everywhere else he’s played except Tampa. Even those stacked Cleveland teams he played on he was just ok.

Why would he jeopardize stability now?
