[Olney] We just had Joey Votto on our broadcast; he is dying to play. Lives 25 minutes from the Jays’ park; could be a really good fit there, in a very right-handed lineup. Angels another possible fit.

  1. I still fail to see how he is a good fit. We have our DH and our everyday first baseman.

  2. I just don’t see how he’s a better option than Vogelbach or Horwitz at the moment.

  3. If he was okay with being a platoon DH/bench bat then sure, but he deserves to go out better

  4. Hire him as special assistant to the offensive coordinator and the second we have injuries on our team, he’s fired. But then comes out of retirement and signs a deal.

Or is he even allowed to sign a minor league deal and just never report to the minors? So he stays with the big league team in a coaching style role without really taking up a roster spot? Similar to Haslem on Miami (although in his case, he did take up a roster spot).

  5. Any of you think this team will be worse with him on it? How much worse? Worse than having people come out to see him? Worse than having Jays shirts with his name on them? Worse than looking forward to him and us having a good time?

  6. It would be a terrible fit. I don’t understand how these major network dudes just exclude one team from their zeitgeist because they are Canadian

  7. Honestly just do it on a minor league deal. Rather him on the bench than a handful yhat will be there

  8. Leafs love giving the hometown deal, Spezza, Simmonds, Gilmours 1 shift final game.
Often doesnt work out. But if Rogers has the money, why not sign Votto? Gives some buzz to which there has been little.
Gives you a face in the community for next 20 years post-playing.
Even if he hits 20 HR and calls it a career, we dont get many chances to have a hometown player.

  9. I generally like getting Canadians playing for the Jays and respect Votto as a player. Budget would not be an issue. But there is simply no room for him. We’d have to give up on a key player just to add a sentimental role. As others have said, maybe if we had not been able to sign JT, but as it stands it just does not make sense.

There are gaps on the roster but none that Votto can fill.

  10. If he sacrificed some pride and wanted to be a bench bat sure. The Reds were willing to keep him if he agreed to a much reduced role and well now here we are.

  11. Honestly who cares if he doesn’t fit perfectly. It was a disappointing offseason and we may as well get some good vibes in the mix. If the price is fair, what’s the worst that can happen?

  12. Y’all spent last year complaining about how this team was no fun and the vibes were super bad and now none of you want to fix that with Votto, FOR SHAME
