It sounds like they kept him because they like him as a person.
All the accolades don’t line up with his performance on the ice. He always looked overmatched in the playoffs; he’s obviously improved as a player since then, but is still a bottom 6 talent.
And if he’s a great leader, it sure hasn’t resulted in much hockey-wise.
Most fans don’t understand the human element of sports. Emotion, camaraderie, support on and off the ice, and other unquantifiable things are as important as some of the advanced stats. And only those “in the room” understand their value. None of us giving our 2-cent opinions here ever have a whit of understanding about this stuff. From what I see on the ice, I would like to see Laughton traded for a 1st if one is offered. And if one is offered and they decline, I’m going to trust their reasoning. That said, I think if they get offered a 1st for Laughton this summer, they’ll take it.
I have been waiting for Scott Laughton the hockey player to be traded for what feels like a short eternity at this point, but if Scott Laughton the person has had as positive of an impact on the culture on the team as we’ve seen this past season then I can totally understand why they decided to keep him for at least the duration of this playoff run barring a massive overpay
If the offers sucked, keep him.
If it turns out we were offered like 2 firsts then it was a bad idea.
Because of the way the cap is most of the contending teams want rentals. So he has another year on his contract. Maybe in the off-season.
