Unpopular opinion: I love Branny’s game

Good 5/6 who can fill in the top 4, play the right side well and find myself rarely complaining about him.

  1. I’ve been liking him on the PP. They’ll still move him though and Wtv team gets him, it’ll be a steal. He’s hit his ceiling here and he probably knows he won’t be able to advance in Ottawa. Hoping his talents get used well elsewhere.

  2. I love Branny, but unfortunately, he doesn’t have a place here. With Chabot and Sandy to play the powerplay and top 4 left side along with all of our offensive forwards, he will never get a chance on the powerplay. He will get traded in the offseason for peanuts, and whoever gets him will get a steal of deal.

Along with all of the above, this team also doesn’t need Branny as we need more size and grit for our bottom pair. We need a bottom pairing guy that specializes on the PK, and that just isn’t Branny. All the things that Branny does well we already have in spades, which is the big issue with this team. They have way too many of the same thing.

  3. They’re going to trade him and he’s going to be a top-4 guy somewhere else. Fucking sucks.

  4. He’s a bit of an analytics darling, but he’s second last among defence men in shooting talent above average (-27.1%), he can’t shoot. Takes and can’t kill penalties and is an average passer.

All that being said I think he could improve elsewhere, but not sure what the market is for a guy that gets good analytics by skating pucks out with control into decent areas and releasing a muffin.

  5. The people who dislike Brännström think that the only useful thing a defenseman (who doesn’t score) can do is cross check people in the crease and get hit with pucks. Positioning, stick checks, retrievals, and exciting the zone effectively don’t register for them. DJ was one of them.

  6. I’m gonna be sad if/when we give up on him. He’s a really good offense and defensive playdriver in his current role. He’s exactly what we need as a 5th defenseman. I’m not against adding size to the defense – I think playing him with a big partner could be fine, but the idea just replacing him with someone who’s 6’5″ is gonna make the team better is really funny to me
