  1. Robot umps would be a boon to hitters, as most umps err in favor of the pitchers. I can’t wait.

  2. No shit? Robo umps will just give you the call based on the parameters you set, nothing more nothing less.

  3. I live in Korea, am a season ticket holder, and stream away games and I can say it is a night and day difference.

The umpires now make calls quickly instead of pausing to do their little show on calls. If I didn’t know the umpires were getting calls relayed to them, I would never know.

The strikezone is consistent for both teams finally. It was so inconsistent between top and bottom half of innings, that it’s tough to think the umpires didn’t have money on the games.

The strikezone is also consistent throughout the game as it would change from the beginning of the inning and the end of the game. After the fifth inning stretch (yes 5th inning not 7th inning), players and pitchers had to learn a new strikezone.

Players and pitchers aren’t arguing every single pitch anymore, which speeds up the game and makes it more enjoyable to watch.

The umpires were 91% accurate before and that includes them widening the strikezone a couple years ago that made the strikezone go from one batters box to another because the umpires were so awful.

This could not have come soon enough and will make the game so much better for all the fans.

  4. Why don’t we just allow the teams to challenge balls and strikes instead of getting rid of umps? Give them a certain number of reviews.

Edit: To those of you downvoting this, read my responses below as to why. There is a real cost to using robo-umps that you might not be thinking of.

  5. Well yeah that’s a given. How players are feeling about it is more important though.

  6. In terms of fairness, robo umps are a good addition, but one of the most important tasks of a catcher is framing. Furthermore, it makes some pitches less lethal. For example, a good splitter, sweepers etc. is normally a ball. You can basically try to sit on fastballs with two pitch guys such as Gausman and Felix Bautista. Still not easy, but it rewards standing still to ambush a fastball or to draw a walk.

In the KBO, robo umps were well needed, because command is almost non-existent with some of their pitchers, but in MLB I do not think it will make the sport more exciting.

  7. Is the Dodgers Padres series going to be KBO ump crew with the robo umps. Or are MLB umps flying out too?

  8. Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (yes, that’s a thing) must be going bonkers and noted bigoted frequent commenter Bob Davidson probably blaming it on the softball girls…

  9. Umpire accuracy is 93%. You’re speaking of completely eliminating a core part of the sport over 15-20 pitches spread throughout the game. Only a few of those will truly be impactful. That’s what allowing review does. It allows for the fun theatrics, it adds to the strategy. It keeps the human element in the sport while getting these calls corrected. I’d at least like to see it before completely eliminating the most impactful duty of the umpires.

  10. Robos are accurate wow so fun. No one wants to watch a perfectly accurate game 162 times a season.

  11. That 0.1% failure will be a contentious topic when it happens though. God forbid it comes at a bad time too lol

  12. I mean, it’s pretty hilarious that it got any wrong when it’s graded against itself.

  13. I miss the days of minimal technology and timeouts for replays in sports. The imperfections were fun

  14. Please bring it to MLB. Too many games are decided based on the incompetence of officials and not on the skill of the players, which is anathema to what baseball is about.
