[Olney] The Yankees are “extremely unlikely” to sign Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery

  1. Full quote: “There are proven veterans still unsigned — most notably Blake Snell, who won the NL Cy Young Award last season, and former Yankee Jordan Montgomery. But the price the Yankees would pay for an expensive free agent — especially for only a few weeks without Cole, rather than a half-season or more — makes this extremely unlikely.”

  2. Just seeing this post after hearing some dweebs on WFAN say that they absolutely need to sign Snell, Montgomery, Bauer, or all three or else the season will be a failure if they don’t

  3. I find it so hard to believe that Snell doesn’t have a team. If he was a free agent next year, he would still be the top starter on the market…although he’d have a close enough comp with Burnes.

I feel like teams should just pony up for him at this point, he’s easily worth a 6/180 kind of contract.

  4. No shit. Yankees are at the Cohen tax and aren’t going to panic sign either. They haven’t been on either them they’re just trying to squeeze money out of the teams interested.

If the Yankees add a starter it’ll be a mid-season trade. They’re banking on Matt Blake/Briend to work some more magic and their pen to help carry the load.

Unless Cole gets a worse prognosis than he already has I doubt they make a move before June

  5. NYY finish 4th with Soto? The Orioles are almost certainly better, the Rays usually figure something out, and the Blue Jays will be tough.

  6. It was fun not hating Hal/Cashman for a few months.

    Nothing lasts forever, I suppose.

  7. If Cole is out for the season they can make a move at the deadline for another starter.

  8. Doesn’t surprise me.

Any additions the Yankees make at this point will be taxed at 110%. So for example, if Snell wants a $30M AAV, it would cost the Yankees an additional $33M on top of that.

Personally, I don’t give a shit what the Yankees spend, but it’s likely that our owner does care. Especially after the Yankees spent almost $300M plus $30M+ in taxes just to miss the playoffs last year.

And then on top of the financial penalties, Snell would cost us TWO draft picks due to the QO (our 2nd and 5th round picks in 2025).

And if Snell signs for more than one year, it just makes it harder for the Yankees to reset the tax. Which means more draft penalties (dropping in the draft order) and international money penalties (less to spend on int talent). I suspect the Yankees want to keep the option to dip under the threshold next winter in their pocket.

  9. I understand that he has warts but it is insane to me that the reigning CYA winner is still unsigned. Just crazy.

  10. Since this is Buster Olney I assume that means the Yankees are less than 24 hours away from signing both

  11. I wonder how many big name free agents have to go unsigned halfway or all the way through spring training before it starts to hurt Boras and his reputation.

  12. At this point I don’t think Blake Snell will sign with anyone which is absolutely nuts

  13. He says they’re extremely unlikely to sign Snell *or* Montgomery, he says nothing about Snell *and* Montgomery

    *taps head*

  14. If the Yankees really offered him $150 million during the offseason and he said no, that is a massive fuck up by Boras.

  15. The sad thing is we wanted to keep him. His price went through the roof. Love Blake, and I hate to see him not playing. Wish we could’ve worked a deal for the long haul.

  16. Starting to wonder if for Snell at least he’s gonna have to wait until the Qualifying Offer penalty is gone to sign. Still think Montgomery will sign before the season.

  17. may as well just concede the season then. cole is going to miss most if not the entire year, this pitching staff is not going to be competitive.

  18. Idk what Snell wants. I’d imagine around 30 a year so, with the Yankees payroll position, they’d have to pay over 60 million this year for him. Doesn’t seem likely (or worth it). It’s also interesting that Boras plan of waiting until the last second for the top dollar might be outdated. Most teams are set and, with the luxury tax, are mostly unwilling to break that for one of his guys. Might be more advantageous to get guys signed early so teams can fill out the roster around that big deal. Not try to squeeze a big deal into a payroll that’s basically already set

  19. Don’t think it’s great for baseball that these two are unsigned with the regular season starting in a week. Imagine an unrestricted free agent all star being unsigned in any other sports league. Wouldn’t happen

  20. Generally the worst case scenario for the Yankees, since they will pin any failures this season on the Cole injury, instead of Cashman’s shitty roster construction.

They’re going to be a .500 team again, as they have been for the last 200 games WITH Cole.

I guess with how the playoffs are you can still make the playoffs and be a few games over .500, but anyone who thinks the Yankees are a deep playoff threat without Cole is smoking something good.

If they don’t replace Cole with someone in the Snell/Monty realm then the Soto acquisition was an utter waste.

  21. Is any team likely to sign them at this point? Baffling that they’re both still available.
