I’m reminded of an octogenarian Texan I met on my first cruise – long before Duolingo was a thing. He’d taught himself multiple languages, entirely out of books; his accent was completely Texan and he didn’t always pronounce things correctly, but his grammar was perfect and he was far more fluent than I was, despite my having been raised in an immersion program. Always amazing to see what driven autodidacts can accomplish.
