  1. Why would we give up two draft picks and international signing money for one or two years of a guy that isn’t going to make us contenders? Doesn’t really make sense to me when our farm system is one of the worst in baseball.

  2. I like Snell, but this sounds like a horrible deal. It’s gonna take a lot more than him to improve this team. Especially if they spend $33 million and a draft pick just for him to leave in 8 months.

Also, wouldn’t they lose the same draft pick they got when Ohtani left? That’d make it even worse IMO

  3. Nah, he has a QO attached and we need all the draft picks we can get. If he has a good first year, he opts-out and we give up a draft pick for a one year deal during a year we surely aren’t contending. If he has a bad year, we give up a draft pick for possibly two bad years of Snell.

  4. Loss of draft pick and international bonus pool money says otherwise. However, if Jordan Montgomery were willing to accept that, I’d say why not. They really don’t have much to lose at that point

  5. Yeah, that’s not a good deal for the team. I’d rather just let our guys show what they’ve got than waste even more of the future of the organization on such a deal.

  6. Losing a draft pick for 1 year of Snell would be the dumbest thing. It makes sense for Houston because they’re going all in. We’re trying to hopefully maybe compete and grow the young core over the next couple years.

  7. What good does renting him for $33 mill or more for one year do? Does it make the Angels a contender? No

  8. Snell is in that weird position where top teams have to give up a lot to sign him (Yankees would have to pay double the salary because of the tax, Astros would lose another pick, lose intl. signing money and move to the highest luxury tax level) and the other teams who balk at the type of contract (early opt outs) he wants to have.

  9. It almost seems after both Shohei and Yamamoto contracts, baseball owners collectively decided to “opt out” of high paying contracts this year. It’s almost as if they want to put a stop to what they perceive as hemorrhaging

That said, Boras is setting it up nice. The opt out of his client(s) after the first year is a “prove it” contract in order that if a client does way better than what was expected -they can offer their services for a higher market value. If they do average or perform poorly, they still have another “prove it” deal in the works alongside money that is guaranteed.

  10. Just give us Lorenzen at this point. He’s shown he can be a decent starter. Plus he’d love to come back and play for his hometown team.

  11. As an Angels fan my whole life, I’m ok not signing him and see how this year plays out.

  12. I want 22M a season for 2 years with an opt out after this season. I’m 1/3rd the cost. Sign me Arte!

Just cuz he’s asking it doesn’t mean we have to pay.

  13. A short term deal with a draft pick attached is the worst of both worlds. It takes a draft pick away and he won’t be around long enough to be on the next competitive team.

But if there isn’t a no-trade clause attached, I’d do it with the intention of shopping him at the trade deadline (and eating the salary to get solid MiLB compensation).

  14. This would be a horrible deal for the Angels. The Angels lose a draft pick and if Snell opts out (which he probably would), they have nothing to show for it.

  15. A short deal makes no sense for the Angels. A longer term deal with lower AAV does make sense. 7/180 for example. If Snell wants more total dollars then the Angels could be a fit. But high AAV short term is pointless.

  16. Only reason I could see to sign a QO guy is if we could potentially deal him at the deadline or next offseason for prospect(s) better than what our second-round pick would yield.

  17. My opinion is spend nothing. This season is a lost season. Prepare for the draft and don’t give up any picks. Save money. And prepare for 2025.

  18. I feel like Bauer for league minimum would be less detrimental to the team than Snell for that money and a draft pick
