THG has the Avs as best in the West

He doesn't think anyone in the West can stop the Avs.

  1. I do think we have some off games every now and then but with Val back and the new depth pick ups AND in a best of series? I have a lot of faith we probably are the best in the west

  2. I’m a homer, but it’s hard to argue with it. We’ve looked really good almost all season, outside of the East coast road trip after the all-star break.

Outside of that trip, we’ve only lost 3 in a row one other time this year, and one of those was a shootout, one was an OT loss. We’ve had 4 two game losing “streaks”, every other one of our 10 losses is a one off.

I think we’ve gotten better after the trade deadline too, hard to argue that a top 3 team that got better isn’t #1, especially when they’ve beaten Vancouver and Dallas multiple times in the last few months.

We are rolling and I’d be scared to play us in the playoffs if we can keep this up and stay healthy.

  3. I really like his power rankings, doesn’t just look at record and put them in order of points, but instead actually watches every game and grades on each teams performance in that week.

  4. Honestly, Oettinger’s recent struggles have me feeling a lot better about our chances of coming out of the Central bloodbath.

I’d like to avoid Winnipeg in the first round rather than Dallas for the first time this year. I think we stack up well against Winnipeg, don’t get me wrong, but Hellebuyck getting white-hot for a series could end any team’s season.

Ideally we’d win the division and let Dallas and Winnipeg batter each other for a series before we have to play them, but I’m not as worried about a Colorado/Dallas first round as I was a month ago.

Our trade deadline being the best I can remember for the Avalanche doesn’t hurt either.

  5. Like the two possible tough match ups for us in the west, are Winnepeg and vegas (when they miraculously Heal up for the playoffs). Match up wise, Winnepeg is tough, and they have elite goaltending. Vegas is Vegas and added more depth. Dallas edmonton and Vancouver don’t scare me one bit. Especially if we keep rolling until playoffs start

  6. THG’s opinions about quality of play are meh. He’s a good guy to have to recap what happened in a game, that’s about it.

That being said I will put on my homer cap and agree. I think it’s us and Edmonton at the top of the heap right now. Especially if Georgie is well rested and keeps playing well, Kovalenko is decent and if everyone stays healthy. The forward groups are roughly equal now that we have Mittelstadt and Trenin, and our defense is far better than Edmonton’s.

Vancouver and Winnipeg have been carried by the PDO gods. Vegas even when healthy has looked honestly mediocre. Nashville is hot but it won’t last. Kings are okay.

Dallas is a big threat though.

  7. I think the importance of the trade deadline moves can’t be overstated. Before deadline week, I’d say the Avs were a long shot for the cup. After? Holy shit, look out. Avs comin’ for ya, Lord Stanley.

  8. Just let us play Dallas. I don’t really like the prospect of clawing every game for 1st just to face Nashville who might be scarier than either of the other options right now. Not to mention the toll fighting for that spot will take, and our schedule to end the year looks tough

  9. It’s been a great season, other than a slow start and that awful roadtrip. The trades have me excited for playoffs.
