Ryen Russillo is voting Wembanyama for DPOY

  1. First of the people (that I know of) who hold a vote to say they’re voting for wemby. Pretty cool even though I doubt he’ll win.

  2. He can’t possibly take the blame for the Spurs defense when he’s off the court, can he? That’s what seems like is happening. Compare the D when he’s in vs when he’s out. That’s all you need to know.

  3. I mean he changes the game from a defensive stand point all season. And probably to a dpoy level.
There is nothing he can do about his team and when he isn’t on court.

His offense is what improved from mid season. So Simmons is wrong about that

Simmons admitted mid season he wasnt watching spurs games so his bad takes are inevitable

  4. No one wants to do the “swap them and what happens?” test here for some reason. Surrounding Vic with elite perimeter defenders and a lineup full of grown ups…hmmm…I wonder if he’d be any good.

Gobert is operating from a space without pressure. He doesn’t need to contribute on both ends, doesn’t need to be a leader, doesn’t need to field endless questions from the press pool. He’s gotta do the one thing he’s good at, and he has so much help it’s ridiculous. Is that not worth sizing up against Vic playing with a bunch of prospects, half of whom won’t be in NBA rotations in 2 years?

I don’t mind if Rudy wins. I’d just like to see a real argument for it that focuses on the specifics of his performance. This clip is good at highlighting this. Russillo watches games. Simmons runs a media enterprise and watches highlights. So Weird how their opinions shook out.

  5. What is our defensive rating while Wemby is on the floor and what is the wolves while Rudy is on the floor? I don’t know how to get these kinds of custom stats. All I ever see is on/off difference but I’d like to see it just when they’re both on? If we are still in the bottom 5-10 then so be it.

  6. I thought it was Defensive Player, not Defensive Team??? Plenty of MVPs that I can think of off the top of my head were not on the best team that year. I’d have to do some research about DPOY.

  7. Too bad they don’t have some sort of tournament at the end of the year to determine the best team. That way the awards can be individual based instead of team based.

  8. I’m always of the mind that team success should be irrelevant for individual awards.

Where did Inter Miami finish last season in the MLS? Was there any doubt that Messi was the most valuable player in that league? That’s how I see it.

  9. Russillo is right. Simmons is probably not entirely wrong but objectively Wemby is beyond logic. To move on to another award…think if in 15 years someone sees Holgrem ROY…come on…

  10. So let me get this straight: if Wemby averaged 30 PPG, the Spurs would have a strong record and he’d then be eligible for DPOY. So *offense* is the determining factor for *Defensive Player of the Year*.

And this makes sense to people?

  11. According to Stat Geek Supreme Kirk Goldsberry, over the last 15 games, the Spurs have the #1 defense with Wemby in the game and the #25 defense with Wemby out of the game.

You can’t blame wemby that Collins, Branham, Keldon can’t play defense. Wemby has been the best defensive player in the league by far and no one else is even close.

  12. So I guess this is a new thing or did he vote Duncan at the top of DPOY every year of his career?

  13. So he has to be punished because the rest of the team can’t defend?

Individual awards in the NBA are a joke.

Let’s not even discuss the leading scorer award.

  14. Bill Simmons has degraded into a characteur of awful sports takes. He’s Stephen A. without the screaming. It’s a damn shame. His column on the last page of SI used to be one of my favorite things to read. I can’t remember the last time he had a good take.

  15. Defensive POtY should 100% be based on a players splits. As far as the Spurs D, they have one of the top defensive 5-man lineups in the league. Simmons is a stooge.

  16. Don’t be a homer here, Bill has a perfectly valid point. The same way a guy with the 23rd worst record shouldn’t be MVP, an guy on the 23rd worst defense shouldn’t be DPOY

  17. BS pod is only watchable when someone like Ryen or House is on to call Bill out on his bullshit.

Bill’s been especially insufferable on his Spurs discourse this year too.

  18. All of Simmons Spurs takes have been awful lately.

    1) Trade 4 firsts for Garland just to make us fun.

    2) Keldon being one of the “worst contracts “ when he is being paid fringe starter money and it’s a declining deal! Simmons actually argued that the declining aspect of the deal made the deal worst.

    3) Again about Keldon. Using Keldons on/off numbers against him when he’s carrying the bench for the good of the team.

  19. Bill has been a giant antiSpursite this year. Been annoying to listen to whenever he talks Spurs.

He should talk about them glowingly after they gave the Celtics Derrick White.

Started this summer with how they should’ve offered Austin Reaves a max contract.

  20. All you have to do is compare the Spurs defense with Wemby on vs. off the court. The difference is absolutely insane.

  21. If I remember correctly, the Spurs have one of the worst defenses in the league (if not *the* worst) without Victor on the floor. But when he is on the court, it shoots up to **6th best in the league.**

Think about how insane that is.

Does anybody think that Rudy Gobert would be able to have the same impact if we swapped him and Victor?

That has to be an unmatched defensive impact for a single player to bring.

  22. Bill’s got odds on someone else he hopes pays out. Because the differentials make a great Wemby DPOY case and he’s just ignoring that.
