The strategy of every 5-on-3 in the history of ice hockey has been to get the three guys to collapse into the smallest triangle possible. For some reason, we shoot from the perimeter and allow the three to reform a large triangle with every missed attempt. It’s totally bonkers. Thompson wouldn’t be allowed to coach most junior teams in North America.
