  1. >”Through 45 games this season under Lambert, the once stout Islanders sunk to the bottom of the league defensively. At five-on-five, the team dropped to 31st in shots against, conceding almost 68 attempts per 60 minutes of play. That ranked ahead of only the lowly San Jose Sharks. The team wasn’t just allowing shots against, but quality chances as well, especially off the rush. At the time of Lambert’s dismissal on Jan. 20, the Islanders were last in the league with 14.6 rush shots against per 60, according to Stathletes.”

    >”The primary result of the adjustment under Roy is that the Islanders aren’t spending as much time in their own zone. Since Roy took over, New York’s allowed about 10 shot attempts fewer per 60. And the team has really cleaned up the quality of those chances against, with an expected goal rate of 2.09 per 60 that stands as the best in the league since Jan. 21.”

    >”The Islanders turned one of the biggest weaknesses — how they defend in transition — into a strength. The team has gone from 32nd in its rate of rush shots against to eighth in the league heading into Tuesday night, only allowing 10.9 per 60 since the coaching change. The team’s rush chances were also reduced, from the 24th-worst standing in the league during the Lambert era to the fifth-best over the last two months.”

To summarize: The team has been A LOT better defensively, but the scoring has dried up. Only 9GF over the 6 game losing streak.

  2. lol of course this sub is gonna be negative till the very end so i expect this thread to devolve into “SEASONS OVER BOOOOOOOO FIRE LOU WE’RE COOKED”

  3. He quite literally hasn’t gotten them back in the playoff race, though. In fact, they’re further away from a playoff spot now than when he was first hired. What even is this??

Look, I understand people love Patrick Roy. I understand he’s not going to fix things overnight. I understand that improvements need to made to this roster. I understand judging him on this season alone wouldn’t be an accurate assessment of his coaching ability. But we don’t need to promote falsehoods like this in order to prop the guy up.

  4. I remember seeing a comment back in November or so saying something to the effect of “These OTLs are keeping us in the race now, but we really should be winning these games so that we have a cushion when the lean times inevitably come.” Most teams have stretches where they’re not doing as hot as usual, and that seems to be the Islanders right now with their scoring. Last year it was that abysmal January

I want to see how Roy does with a clean slate. Obviously the whole roster will be another year older next season, but it’ll be interesting to see nonetheless. Anyone who’s been watching this team knows they’ve been better since Roy was hired, 6-game losing streak notwithstanding

  5. This team could win 6 in a row and lose 6 in a row, knuckle drag themselves into a playoff spot, and there would still be emotions all over the place.
