  1. All will get more consistent at bats and opportunities to refine. Pratto needs more work in the outfield (both corners) and some time to dial in swing vs AAA talent. He’s been raking against pitching from A-AA level most of the time. Give him a bit of higher level seasoning makes sense to me

  2. Did not think Nola had options in his contract. Can he opt for free agency if he’s not on the major league roster after 30 days?

  3. Not really a huge shock because the Royals don’t act like they value Pratto much anyways.

Pratto is gonna be somewhere else in a year or so and the Royals will hope the whole thing doesn’t make them look too dumb for not seeing what some other org could see. Even if it’s a O’Hearn sort of short term thing.

  4. Honestly I’m a little surprised by Nola being optioned.

Waters and Pratto each make some sense even if they’ve been doing alright this Spring, Pratto especially. Right now the Royals have clearly chosen to put their stock in Vinnie and Isbel to start at 1B and CF so they might as well option the other guys to let them get consistent playing time. They’ll be back up at some point though.

Nola is weird to me because I assumed they signed him for his defense and the goal was to make him a backup catcher. I guess this means that they’re just going to platoon Salvy and Fermin which makes some sense but they’re going to have to ween Salvy off of catching duties eventually so I figured this would be the year to do it.

  5. Welp, I guess that means it’s either Loftin or Blanco for that fourth bench spot (Fermin, Frazier, Hampson). Unless I’m missing someone.

  6. When we drafted Pratto, no one could’ve predicted Vinny would become as good as he is. Hard to have a lineup of all lefty 1Bs

  7. To be honest where does Pratto fit on the MLB roster where he is going to get consistent AB’s? Unless Vinnie’s defense falls flat and he moves to DH, Pratto doesn’t have a spot. Even then Vinnie moving to DH would only work if Salvy is able to catch 90% of the season and that’s not going to happen. You could try to platoon him with Velasquez at DH but even then Pratto has shown that he can’t really do much unless he has consistent reps. Plus as much as Velasquez strikes out, Pratto strikes out even more (40% of the time).

Pratto may get a call if Melendez struggles but at this point Pratto being inconsistent on offense and one dimensional on defense are the reason he is going to Omaha.
