Posting a random Steeler every day until kickoff or I forget – Day 23: Sean Morey

WR Sean Morey (2004-2006)

Sean Morey was drafted in the seventh round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots out of Brown University, where he had finished his career second in all-time receiving yards in Division I-AA behind only Jerry Rice, and was the first Brown player to have his number retired.

Morey stayed with New England until the end of the 2000 season, spending most of his time on the practice squad. In 2001, he joined the Philadelphia Eagles, becoming a big contributor on special teams, voted their 2003 Special Teams MVP.

The Steelers signed Morey in September 2004 as an unrestricted free agent, playing mostly on special teams, eventually getting more involved on offense in 2006 en route to the Super Bowl XL Championship due to injuries to Hines Ward and Cedrick Wilson. He led the team in special teams tackles, and returned 8 kickoffs for 202 yards, including a 76-yard return in a week 11 win over Cleveland.

He would then spend 3 seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, being voted to the Pro Bowl as a special teamer in 2008, and then sign with the Seattle Seahawks but announce his retirement before he ever played a game with Seattle.

After retiring, Morey got involved in the league’s concussion protection efforts, being named co-chair of the NFLPA’s Concussion and Traumatic Brain Injury Committee in 2008, having suffered 20+ concussions throughout his own playing career. He advocated for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of concussions for active players as well as the research into the long-term effects of the injuries.
