White Sox Release Mike Moustakas

I figure anyone who (a) is available, and (b) can play 3B is worth a moment or two of consideration

  1. Look at his numbers since 2021.

No. It’s not 2017 anymore despite what Brian Cashman might think.

  2. I thought he was out of the league years ago. But guys with the nickname “Moose” have a good history here.

  3. We don’t need a backup 3B. We need a backup SS. We have Jorbit Vivas on the 40-man with an option remaining. He’s only played three innings at shortstop in the minors… almost a thousand at third (and 2,700 at second).

If DJLM goes on the IL, Cabrera moves to third base and we would need a backup infielder on the bench. Right now it would likely be Vivas.

But what if Volpe goes down? Gleyber to SS and Vivas to 2B would be the short term solution but we want an in-house option to be the backup.

Right now the highest ranked SS in our system according to Fangraphs is Jeter Downs and he’s not on the 40-man.

So if we’re in the market for a veteran who can be an insurance policy… I would hope it’s a guy who can play shortstop.
