Jerry Jones “absolutely” expects a hip-drop tackle ban…NFLPA says they don’t have an issue with the hip drop. Owners seem intent on changing the rule. My problem, and I’m sure most fans feel this way, is the interpretation. We all know officiating is at an all time low with judgement calls.

  1. Owners need to do something about the perceived bias of the refs before they try to change the game again. I don’t care about replacement refs being an issue, they need to establish a system and structure for them. Until they do that, adding rules to the game is just window dressing.

  2. I mean, I’ve seen the proposed definition and I don’t think it’s nearly as vague and open to interpretation as all the hand wringing would lead you to believe. I feel like a lot of people think a hip drop tackle is a defender wrapping the ball carrier and dropping their weight down, which isn’t the case.

  3. I don’t know that officiating is necessarily at an all time low.

What I do know is that the number of games, the number of primetime games, the use of social media to share clips, the affordability of high def cameras and TVs, and the number of analysts on morning shows are each at an all time high.

  4. I watch Rugby League as my main sport here in Australia and out league banned hip drop tackles a couple years ago and we had the same initial outrage at the ban. Ever since it’s been pretty clear on the rules of what constitutes a hip drop and the players mostly went and changed tackling techniques with only the occasional occurrence.

  5. There will likely be issues with the enforcement early, should there be a ban. The NFL changes the interpretation to rules so often that it creates a ton of confusion for refs

  6. Fuck it, let’s just two hand touch this mug. As soon as the defender wraps up the refs should call the play dead. Otherwise the tackle might be very dangerous… /s

  7. I thought I read last week they would mostly enforce it with fines. Which I took to mean that it probably wouldn’t be flagged during a game.
