Day 56 of posting my favorite Raiders player to wear the number of the day: Derrick Burgess

“Here’s a guy” who made a living out of terrorizing the QB. In 2005 he set the Raiders season record for sacks in a season with 16, a record that still stands to this day. This was right around the time I was really becoming a Raiders fan and Derrick really reinforced that decision. One of the brightest spots of all during the darkest years of the franchise.

I always remember this when Burgess’s name comes up. Was such a surprising achievement in such a long time period of us having no pass rush either before or after this season.

Pat Swilling’s contribution was very similar, came to us later in his career and gave us a couple of good years of getting to the QB.

  2. Warren Sapp called Burgess “the meanest LE in the game & the baddest one I ever played with”
