  1. I think people have a tendency to develop a narrative when they see an authority on a matter act a certain way, without giving clear explanations for their actions.

Berggen’s entire season has been a byproduct of Yzerman signing too many veterans this year. Obviously if he had signed nobody in the offseason, Berggren would’ve made the team. Instead, guys like Christian Fischer were brought in and no matter how much firepower Berggren showed or what defensive improvements he added, you can’t scratch a veteran, hard working guy like Fischer after you just signed him. We all know this is how things go. Jeff Petry has not been sat all season because he’s a somewhat reliable veteran that Yzerman went out of his way to sign.

All of the talk about how Berggren is small and can’t play defense is irrelevant. GMs have to play games of roster management too, and if it’s easier to just keep a guy down in GR because he’s young and helping out your AHL team than it is to explain to a 30+ year old being paid millions why he isn’t playing, that’s the route GMs will take. Yzerman even said that they wouldn’t sit Berggren just to preserve his waiver exemption status. Except they will, if it benefits the team. Better to keep Czarnik down here right now because we have so little depth at center and let Berggren keep the Griffins going. It has nothing to do with Berggren as a player. They saw that he has promise last year, and that potential hasn’t disappeared.

  2. You really do turn a blind eye to his defensive shortcomings. Every NHL game he got to play this year he caused a goal against with a giveaway. Wings are no longer is a position where they can have people learning the game in the NHL. If they want to make the team they best be ready.

  3. Yeah, they haven’t treated him good at all IMO. But I feel like Yzerman always wanted him for the rebuild, but he just doesn’t fit Lalondes system.

Id put the blame on Lalonde, then again, a shit coach is gonna be shit.

I’m surprised Raymond is preforming as good as he does in Lalondes system, but we did see it all turn sour real quick without Larkin.

At least Ed gets to play now, even though it obviously was because of emergency reasons.

Edit: also I’ve learned to not try to get frustrated with people here at reddit in the hockey forum, most of these people have never played and really have no idea about hockey except for spectators.

I’ll be happy when I see Berggren in another team next year that actually play with speed, skill and quickness.

  4. Guys, he’s 23. Not every player we draft is gonna be a superstar in their D+1/2 year . . . If he can grow that talent he will push into a top six role. If he can’t then he’ll need to round out other parts of his game to be an effective top 9/ bottom 6 player.

    Again, he’s 23 . . .

  5. There’s no conspiracy.

We’re a deep team this year, and points matter. LaLonde isn’t going to risk playing Berggren when we don’t need scoring-we need reliable play defensively in all zones more so than offense.

He’s gotten opportunities this season, maybe fewer than he deserves, but that’s due to our surprising lack of injuries at wing. And when he has gotten opportunities, he’s made some mistakes. Does he deserve to be criticized for those mistakes? No, but the reality is his leash is a lot shorter due to all of the above.
