  1. A very ambiguous statement.

As in Ohtani used Ippei to directly shield himself or Ippei was such a bad translator that things literally were lost in translation?

  2. I heard nothing but good things about Ippei the entire time Ohtani was with the Angels. It seemed like most of the other Angels players liked him and were friends with him. I get he probably has a pretty bad gambling addiction and may have stolen money, but now they are just trying to blame him for anything and everything.

  3. I thought the whole saga was predicated on Ohtani not being able to speak English well so Ippei could lie to them about everything. Are all the coaches going to learn Japanese or am I misreading?

  4. Reading between the lines, def looks like this has led to Ohtani making more of an effort to communicate in English. I don’t blame him at all for running everything through Ippei before so he could focus 100% on baseball, but I can say from experience in a foreign country it’s so easy to use that as a crutch.

The section of the statement yesterday where Ohtani described hearing Ippei talk about the payments and knowing enough English to know something was wrong but not enough to be 100% sure was probably a wake-up call. Can’t imagine how bad that must’ve felt.

  5. Well obviously when you’re in deep gambling debt you would be pretty distracted from your day job…this isn’t some sort of conspiracy smear job by the dodgers.

edit: downvote away, you know I’m right. No one who owes $4.5m and possibly being threaten physically or knows he’s about to be under criminal investigation is going to be able to focus on his job.

  6. I mean is he not gonna use a translator now? Was he just faking not being able to speak English?

I know a lot of guys use them just for interviews so there’s no misunderstanding. Guys like Darvish can communicate just fine without one for day to day interactions.

  7. Well, Ohtani is gonna be forced to talk more without being able to defer to his buddy. So I can see why he would say that. Doesn’t mean Ippei did anything wrong in that sense, it’s just a different dynamic

  8. “Okay Shohei, we appreciate you meeting with us, so we’re thinking of having you pitch in week 4.”

    “Pitch?”

“Yeah… is the arm not ready?”

    “I don’t want to pitch”

    “What?”

“Yeah that whole thing was Ippei’s idea, kept telling him no, glad we’re over that. Do you know how tough it is to do both?”

    “Fuck”

  9. Is Ohtani about to get the biggest bag ever from Duolingo? Or do we think Babble land his endorsement?

  10. You kno what’ll be funny. Ohtanis hitting tanks. Ippei was the one doing all the coaching and would ignore whatever the hitting coaches said.
