Here’s what the new NFL kickoff will look like this season:

  1. Personally I’m against it because I don’t think they should put the huge black bars on the top and bottom of the screen during the kickoff.

  2. i was totally against the change when i first heard about it a few weeks ago, but seeing how it will play out should actually improve the game a LOT. maybe it’s been shorter, but it feels like it’s been nearly a decade since we’ve had kicks consistently fielded and returned. should hopefully improve the viewing quality of the sport by quite a bit!

  3. Personally, I like it. We make kickoffs meaningful again and reduce a big opportunity for head injury.

  4. I like the concept, but it looks like arena football or something in practice. Glad to have Nixon and Reed on the team this season.

  5. 80 percent of kickoffs were touchbacks last year. If this lowers that number, which it seemingly should, it’s a win.

  6. I have no data or anything this is just pure speculation but I just feel like you put a guy with insane track speed like an Achane in Miami back there he burns this configuration all day

  7. I really like it. The only real downside is it will make onside kicks even more unachievable.

Now you will have to declare an onside kick. That will mean the receiving team will be able to stack the line even more.

Whatever though, they were already pretty much dead anyways. Move it from a 0.8% chance to a 0.5% chance.

  8. Never seen it live, but I assume the ball carrier and the kickoff team usually collide somewhere between the 20 and 25? Seems like it could be fun, but it’s still a hell of a collision as far as safety goes.

  9. So is the ball live as soon as it hits the ground in the landing zone? It would be rare/unlikely, but: I’m wondering what happens if the ball lands in the landing zone and the kicking team players get to it before a returner has touched it.
