NHL App question

What is the X mean next to NYR?? I haven't seen this in the app before.

  1. Looks like the nhl app doesn’t do this, but I use the ESPN app and they also put an “e” in front of all the teams that have been eliminated from playoff contention. The other sports leagues do this too. If you look at the NFL standings, you’ll see that there are even more letters like this—z for clinching the division, y for clinching a wild card spot, etc. Just some extra context in case you were curious 🙂

  2. X – Clinched playoff spot and will move on to the Stanley Cup Playoffs

Y – Clinched division. This means that no matter how the rest of the season goes, the Panthers have finished as the number 1 team in the division. If I am correct this means they would also have home ice advantage against any other team in their division. They have won the division 3 times. Once in 2012, once in 2016, and once in 2022.

Z – Clinched conference. This means that no matter how the rest of the season goes, the Panthers have finished as the number 1 team and seed in the Eastern Conference. If I am correct this means they would have home ice advantage regardless if they are playing a team from the Atlantic or Metro division. The Panthers last clinched the Eastern Conference in 2022.

P – Clinched Presidents Trophy. This means that no matter how the rest of the season goes, the Panthers will finish with the best record in the regular season and end up as having more points than the other 31 teams. This also guarantees the Panthers home ice advantage through the entire playoffs. The Panthers won this trophy once in 2022. The trophy has a reputation of being a curse to the franchise that wins it.

E – Eliminated from playoff contention. This means you’re not making the playoffs and to get ready for a longer offseason/comeback in October. Luckily, the Panthers haven’t had an E next to their name/abbreviation for a while now depending on who you ask. Like others have said, the NHL doesn’t use E for some reason but other sites do.

Take a look at the standings from prior seasons on sites like Wikipedia so you can see examples with the letters next to the team names/abbreviations. Next time you are at a home game, look up to the rafters and you will see the banners for the various division championships, presidents trophy, etc. Conference championship banners are after you win the 3rd round of the playoffs (aka the conference final). Unless you’re Nashville. They put up a banner for everything.

    TLDR

    X-Playoff Spot
    Y-Division Champions
Z-Clinched #1 seed in the conference
P-Clinched presidents trophy for best record in the league that season
    E-Eliminated from playoff contention

  3. You could’ve press the notes button on top right corner of the app and it tells you
