  1. Well the rain got in the way, have to wait another day, in the end this will be better , people will be able to enjoy the Phillies opening day, rather than hunkering down with the threat of a storm.

Well because of it , we got ourselves Richie Ashburn days until opening day part deux. A fleet-footed center fielder who used his athletic gifts to get on base and chase down fly balls on the field, then a broadcaster that used his storytelling skills to become a much beloved voice off the field, Richie Ashburn would become a fixture on the Philadelphia sports scene for a half century.

Playing in an era that featured stalwart center fielders Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and Duke Snider, the lefty swinging Ashburn twice won the National League batting title, finished second twice and nine times batted over .300. A lifetime .308 hitter, his 1,198 walks and 2,574 hits helped him finish with a .396 on-base percentage.

  2. Richie’s induction into the Philadelphia Baseball Hall of Fame took on special meaning, the retirement of his uniform jersey No. 1 on Aug. 24, 1979. The last player to ever wear #1 for the Phillies was Jose Cardenal (1978-79).

The Phillies sent Cardenal to the New York Mets on August 2, 1979, between games of a twi-night double header featuring the two teams. Cardenal was a member of the Phillies for the first game and switched uniforms and dugouts to join the Mets for the second. He played for the New York Mets for the balance of the 1979 season and was there for most of the 1980 campaign.

  3. If i had a nickel for every time there were Richie Ashburn days until opening day, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
