  1. I don’t really care who the 3rd QB is tbh. He knows the system so I’m fine with Sam being there for an emergency

  2. I don’t really see a reason unless there’s a guy the staff likes. Realistically, a qb3 would be a fringe roster/practice squad guy, barring injury.

  3. Keep Sam. In a worst case scenario I think he would play well in a Steichen offense

  4. I don’t think it’s a pressing need at all, but if there’s a guy available in the fifth round or later that they think can be a long term backup, I wouldn’t mind that pick. Flacco is only under contract for this season, so if we’re able to draft someone that we’re comfortable with backing up AR, then we won’t need to dip back into the free agent market for that spot again next year.

  5. Just keep him, there’s obviously something the coaching staff likes about him since we’ve kept him as a 3rd QB this long now

  6. Third string QB should be a dart throw IMO. Someone who could be great, but probably won’t be, if everything falls exactly the right way, which it probably won’t. You’re unlikely to get a Purdy or a Brady or a Staubach, but why not swing for it?  It does happen. Think of where the niners would be if they didn’t draft a late round rookie.

  7. Personally agree with the old Green Bay model of adding a new quarterback to the team each year – even when you have the starter. Doesn’t have to be a draft pick each year but a young talent that could be a viable backup/starter in time.

  8. There’s a few guys in this draft that could play in the AR offense way better than Ehlinger. I wouldn’t mind a 5th rounder on it

  9. Sam was really electric his rookie preseason, and I definitely think he’s a scheme fit. I’d like to see him stay.

  10. Keep Sam because he knows the system, and we need depth too many other places to waste the pick, imo.

  11. Might as well keep Sam but his contract is up after this season but he won’t be expensive

  12. For a second, I forgot about Flacco. I guess the my could try to strike gold on Day 3. They already know that Sam isn’t the guy.

Plus, with how QBs were getting hurt, wouldn’t be a bad idea to have 4 and then just adjust based on how camp goes. I mean…it’s just a late round pick.

  13. Best Player Available. Sam is fine for QB3 but if they love somebody in the 6th round go for it.

Trade whoever ends up being QB4 or stash Sam on the practice squad

  14. As much as much as I have skepticism about Sam as an NFL starter(because thats just not what he is) I am OK with him at QB3 for the Colts.

He knows the staff. He knows the team. He’s familiar with the playbook.

Now if the Colts take a QB late and stick him on the practice squad as an insurance policy. I would get that line of thinking as well.

Edit: And yes we might need an insurance policy to a fourth QB. AR is returning from a season ending injury so there will be mucho caution with him. Flacco isn’t a spring chicken anymore so a definite injury risk there, Sam would be third, and then….waiver wire/rookie QB/retread veterans are your options. Maybe a trade likely involving a late round draft pick or a young player not working out (see Rock YaSin).

  15. We need to get a new 3rd string QB from Free Agency. Sam I’m sure is a great guy, but so am I and I don’t get to be on an NFL team. Imagine if the 49ers had just stayed with their 3rd string QB instead of drafting Brock Purdy because their 3rd string guy had a really nice personality and had a great family. It’s nothing personal, but this is a business, not a daycare. If they want to win he needs to go. He’s proven he’s not a guy ever chance he’s received. Downvote me to hell but it’s what a good team would do. You are probably right, he will probably never have to play, but AR got hurt a lot last year, our backup is older than the coach, and Sam just isn’t good enough to win in the NFL, I’m sorry.

  16. 3rd string QB isn’t really a concern so unless there is a real diamond in the rough, better to get depth at other positions.
