It still blows my mind that he debuted in MLB before finishing highschool. He missed opening day his first 2 seasons because he was finishing his spring semester of highschool. In 38 he made his first opening day start with a CG 1 hit shutout. In 1940 he opened the season with the only opening day no hitter in MLB history.
