[Smith] I’m not sure Trent has to done that, actually. He’s had a very spotty season overall and it’s going to be a tough call for the front office. Do they pay him the $20 million (U.S.) a year he wants or do they hand that job off to Dick or are other options out there.

  1. On Temple:

    >Temple’s going to play for a while but whether it’s here is entirely up to him. He’s a free agent and may want to go somewhere else.

    On Gradey:

    >He needs to guard better and get bigger and get used to the game. But, again, a good start.

  2. I’d like for us to retain GTJ, but $20M per may be a bit of a stretch at this point and where we’re at. I would love it if he took 15 and called it a day, signing on the dotted line, but I don’t think he does that even though I’m not sure how many offers he’ll have out there for more than that.

  3. Let’s see what the market says. I don’t think Gary is getting 20 million but would like him to be a part of the bench the next few years. That would really all around strengthen the team.

  4. He shouldn’t get a contact bigger than what we paid Dennis. I hate his game to be honest. I respect his professionalism and work ethic, but he still hasn’t evolved as a decision maker in any way. Dude doesn’t see his teammates. He has the game of a good bench player that can’t perform off the bench. You’re not in a good spot if you’re starting him, and I don’t think he has any trade value whatsoever.

  5. He’s had his time here and he hasn’t done much but it would be so Raptors/Toronto sports franchise-like for him to leave and have a consistent break out career. ![img](emote|t5_2s5sb|5166)

  6. Last year, GTJ averaged 17.4 pts on 43/37/84 shooting splits. This year, he is averaging 13.2 pts on 42/40/77 shooting splits. Last year he couldn’t find anything better than picking his player option which was around 17 million. I doubt he has shown anything this year which suddenly gets him 20 million contract. I doubt Masai and/or Bobby would give him his desired contract.

PS: I wish we had not made the Norman Powell trade. Norm has been pretty good in his sixth man role.

  7. There are many guys in the league who can score 20 points every few games as a starting shooting guard. He’s averaging 13 points a game as a starter in this NBA as the main perimeter option on the team, I don’t know if he’s even worth the contract he’s on now. I’m sure I come off sounding like a hater, but if your one dimension is scoring, you have to do it at a better rate to get paid 20 million a year.

Dick is already a better passer and rebounder, and if he isn’t already, he’ll be a better scorer as soon as he develops his adult strength. Defensively, both of them and the team in general have a long way to go.

  8. I continue to stand by the thought of offer him 3/45 max. If he takes it, great. If not, let him walk.

  9. I’m not much of a GTJ fan, but I don’t like the idea of letting him walk for nothing. I think the ideal situation is sign him for 15-20 mil a year and then hope he plays at or above that level and trade him for picks, maybe a 2nd and some filler, I doubt we can get a 1st for him unless he is having a killer year.

  10. Im a Gary fan, but its time to let him go. Not getting any better in any form of his game. Its all still the same as when we signed him

  11. Not giving him 20. Let him go see what else is out there if he wants to come back to less we can talk. I think there are lots of players capable of doing what he has done for much cheaper.

  12. Time to walk away unless there’s a team friendly deal in the MLE range.

I do think that he could be a contributing player on good playoff team that has better balance. But for the next iteration of this Raptors team I don’t think paying him $20m a year would be clever

  13. Adding US dollars is so funny to me. Like when has any sport ever not talked in USD.

  14. Gary is a great player. Our team is the problem. Letting him go for nothing will be a mistake. He will make a huge difference on a contending team as another scoring option. The reason he doesn’t work for us here, now, is because we aren’t a good enough team.

  15. To me the Norman Powell trade was the writing on the wall that Masai was unsure how to transition this group. While Powell is in the running for 6MotY, Gary is struggling to find a role on a below average unit. I’d rather give his minutes to Gradey

  16. I don’t want him back. Not fun to watch at all. If he put as much thought into his shot selection and defensive discipline as he does with his “fashion” he’d be half decent
